In this publication, international experts discuss many of the most important and contentious issues related to the epidemiology, prevention, screening, treatment and management of prostate cancer. The first section debates a variety of issues including the question of whether the incidence of the disease will increase substantially in the future. The second section features state-of-the-art presentations on four key topics and presents the latest results of an intergroup study on the advantages of combined androgen blockade (CAB) in patients with metastatic disease. Finally, a 'new approaches' section examines recent developments in preclinical research, appraises current and future therapies, and discusses the important issue of quality of life. Presented in an interesting format, this publication effectively documents the current outstanding issues in prostate cancer.

This book, now in an extensively revised second edition, provides an exhaustive review of the state of the art in the management of prostate cancer, from screening to treatment, with emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach. The editors are very excited about the outstanding new or updated contributions from the different expert authors. The opening chapters address basic aspects including epidemiology, pathology, biology, genetics, and chemoprevention. The role of individual and mass screening is carefully appraised, and extensive attention is devoted to diagnosis and clinical work-up by means of recently implemented investigations such as multiparametric MRI and choline PET-CT. The use of active surveillance is examined in detail. Subsequent chapters discuss the different therapies that may be employed: open and minimally invasive, including robot-assisted, radical prostatectomy, the various forms of radiation treatment, high-intensity focused ultrasound, cryotherapy, hormonal manipulations, chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapy. Up-to-date results from practice-changing phase III randomized clinical trials are included and special insights are provided into the interpretation of results and the patient’s perspective.

This book integrates the disciplines of cancer pathology and epidemiology to provide a synergistic and complementary approach to understanding the molecular mechanisms of cancer. This book provides relevant information on the diagnostic, prognostic and predictive molecular pathology of cancer. Epidemiological studies, including descriptive epidemiology, risk factors and molecular mechanisms of disease inform on the etiology and progression of cancer. The text concentrates on major cancers that are currently prevalent and those for which substantial molecular, pathological and epidemiological data is available. Each section is designed to provide an overview of that cancer type in terms of basic biology, review the current epidemiological data surrounding that cancer type and provide information on common practices and challenges related to the molecular pathology of that cancer type. Several relevant techniques in molecular pathology, which facilitate diagnosis and treatment are also explored. Pathology and Epidemiology of Cancer provides a succinct and comprehensive overview of multiple cancer types to guide clinicians during patient care and to guide scientists for innovations in research. It represents an integral resource for pathologists, epidemiologists, medical students as well as translational, basic and clinical science researchers who are all working to progress the field of cancer in terms of diagnosis, treatment and prevention.

Prostate cancer is by far the most common cancer in men and the second leading cause of death due to cancer. It comprises a mixed group of tumours displaying varying clinical behaviour: while some have a very aggressive course, others are rather indolent. Prevention of prostate cancer and discrimination between aggressive and indolent forms are important clinical goals and the acquisition of significant new evidence on means of achieving these aims makes this book particularly timely. A wide range of topics are covered by leading authorities in the field. The biology and natural history of prostate cancer are reviewed and the role of lifestyle and dietary factors, assessed. Detailed attention is paid to risk prediction biomarkers and to the role of novel high-throughput nucleic acid-based technologies in improving risk prediction and thereby allowing tailored approaches to cancer prevention. Potential means of chemoprevention of prostate cancer are also reviewed in depth, covering the very positive new data on the impact of aspirin as well as evidence regarding 5α-reductase inhibitors, DFMO and lycopene. Guidance is provided on the differentiation of aggressive from indolent disease and the policy and research implications of recent findings are examined. This book will be of interest to both clinicians and researchers.

This report presents the latest national survival and prevalence statistics for cancers in Australia from 1982 to 2010. Survival from cancer is a key indicator of cancer prognosis, control and treatment. It refers to the probability of being alive for a given amount of time after diagnosis and reflects the severity of a cancer diagnosis.

Knowledge about cancer genetics is rapidly expanding, and has implications for all aspects of cancer research and treatment, including molecular causation, diagnosis, prevention, screening, and treatment. Additionally, while cancer genetics has traditionally focused on mutational events that have their primary effect within the cancer cell, recently the focus has widened, with evidence of the importance of epigenetic events and of cellular interactions in cancer development. The role of common genetic variation in determining the range of individual susceptibility within the population is increasingly recognized, and is now being widely addressed using information from the Human Genome Project. These new research directions will highlight determinants of cancer that lie outside the cancer cell, suggest new targets for intervention, and inform the design of strategies for prevention in groups at increased risk. Today, the NCI is putting more and more money into research into the genetics of cancer. The very first of the NCI’s stated research priorities is a project called The Cancer Genome Atlas. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) is a comprehensive and coordinated effort to accelerate the understanding of the molecular basis of cancer through the application of genome analysis technologies, including large-scale genome sequencing. The NCI and the NHGRI (National Human Genome Research Institute, where the series editor is employed) have each committed $50 million over three years to the TCGA Pilot Project. This book proposes cover the latest findings in the genetics of male reproductive cancers; specifically cancers of the prostate and testes. The volume will cover the epidemiology of these cancers; model systems, pathology, molecular genetics, and inherited susceptibility.

Prostate cancer continues to be a major threat to men's health, thesecond most common cancer in men, in many countries. Therefore itis increasingly important that those faced with difficult clinicalquestions make the right decisions. Since the first volume waspublished in 2000, many debates persist but new controversies havealso emerged, reflected in the chapters of this new volume. Newauthors have been recruited to give their insight into newer areasof this controversial topic. Challenges in prostate cancer provides a series ofstate-of-the-art review articles, each of which addresses andanswers a contentious question. It includes chapters on medical andsurgical management of all stages of prostate cancer, clinicalinvestigation, epidemiology, clinical trials and basic scientificresearch and covers issues such as the genetic basis of cancer, clinical economics and influence. The authors have used their expertise to distil the availableevidence into practical advice to be used by busy urologists intheir day-to-day practice. And as well as being an overview ofcurrent practice many chapters attempt to give insights into thefuture direction of prostate cancer research and clinicalmanagement.
