This major reference work is the first comprehensive text to review in detail the data currently available on the epidemiology of the main rheumatic and muscoskeletal diseases. The problems of disease definition and criteria are considered with data on the occurrence of these diseases, both prevalence and incidence, and their variation with age, sex, geographical area, ethnic group, and trends over time. The results of epidemiological investigations, looking at both genetic and environmental risk factors, are considered and the impact of specific diseases of survival is also considered. Covering 15 disease areas from inflammatory joint disease and connective tissue disease to degenerative joint disease and non articular conditions, such as low back pain and carpel tunnel syndrome, this is the only text available which offers full coverage of the subject with a truly international perspective.

Organized into 16 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the history of the epidemiology of rheumatism. This text then examines the prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis in screened sample and in total population samples. Other chapters consider the relative significance of rheumatic disorders as a cause of loss of work as revealed by the National Health Insurance statistics. This book discusses as well the pathology of disc disorders, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, benign polyarthritis, metabolic joint disease, general connective tissue diseases, and immune deficiency diseases. The final chapter deals with diagnostic criteria for population investigations of rheumatoid arthritis. This book is a valuable resource for rheumatologists, physicians, and medico-social workers. Readers who are interested in the study of rheumatic diseases will also find this book useful.

Arthritis and Society examines the interaction between the structure of our society and the impact of rheumatic diseases on the lifestyle of those afflicted. It has drawn the distinction between the private and public experience of illness in order to produce a comprehensive analysis of the impact of musculoskeletal disease on society. This book is organized into three main sections. Section 1 analyzes the personal experience of pain of the groups frequently afflicted and discusses the epidemiology and scope of the systemic rheumatic diseases. Section 2 views the plight of those suffering from rheumatic disease from a different perspective. Section 3 highlights the importance of appropriate care and of establishing a more compassionate society which can help lessen the impact of the disease. It also considers the role of rehabilitation. This book will be of interest to people dealing with studies on arthritis and other rheumatic disease and also those interested in understanding the impact on societal structure on healthcare issues.

Prognosis In The Rheumatic Diseases written by N. Bellamy and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Medical categories.

Seer, forecaster, prophet, geomancer, or tout - all predict future events as physicians must. The medical activity is prognosis from the Greek pro (forward) and gnosis (special knowledgeL thus foreknowledge, and the practitioner is the prognosticator, a sobriquet which falls unhappily upon the ear. Like it or not, there is nothing more critical in the management of chronic rheumatic conditions than a reasonably clear picture of what time and disease will bring. The knowledge is so much a part of ordinary medical thinking that we rarely grace it with the label prognosis. But, like so much of "ordinary medical thinking" (an oxymoron, perhaps), quantitative data are very thin and the chestnuts of personal observation and authority figure assertion loom large. Unlike several books I have seen or written, this one on prognosis needs no justification. The entirety of a person's life contributes to and confounds what the future holds. The ingredients include education levet income, support structures such as family, housing, occupation, availability of medical services, diagnosis, treatment, rate of disease progression, age, gender, race, marital status, and others too numerous to mention or too arcane to be recognized. One would think the task of estimating prognosis impossible. And yet there is light on the horizon -we do know a few things such as the effect of high rheumatoid factor titers on the prognosis of RA or the likely outcome of certain kidney lesions in SLE.
