This collection of epilepsy surgical cases illustrates patients with straightforward and challenging pharmacoresistant epilepsy. These cases convey the advancements, investigative strategies, past and modern surgical tools, and sophisticated state-of-the-art of epilepsy surgery and its disciplines. This textbook is organized into four major sections that parallel the contemporary FDA-approved and clinically applicable approaches: resective surgery, disconnection procedures, laser therapy, and neuromodulation. The chapters provide a case-based, interactive, and multidisciplinary integrative approach to pre-operative evaluation, data analysis, and surgical decision-making. In addition, we present alternative approaches to certain diagnostic tools, decision-making strategies, and surgical interventions. This textbook will provide trainees and clinicians with an exhaustive understanding of epilepsy surgery. Moreover, it will be an invaluable resource for preparation for the epilepsy board examination

Textbook Of Epilepsy Surgery written by Hans O. Luders and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-07-11 with Medical categories.

Textbook of Epilepsy Surgery covers all of the latest advances in the surgical management of epilepsy. The book provides a thorough understanding of epileptogenic mechanisms in etiologically different types of epilepsy and explains neuronavigation systems. It discusses new neuroimaging techniques, new surgical strategies, and more aggressive surgical approaches in cases with catastrophic epilepsies. The contributors also analyze the improved statistics of surgical outcome in different epilepsy types. The book follows a systematic approach to the diagnostic evaluation of patients who are candidates for epilepsy surgery. It first discusses the general principles of surgery, and then describes the presurgical evaluation according to the six zones (symptomatogenic, irritative, ictal onset, epileptic lesion, functional deficit, and epileptogenic zone). This series of chapters concludes with the description of the Epilepsy Surgery Management Meeting, an essential and indispensable part of the surgical evaluation. The book next incorporates detailed discussions of the cortical mapping techniques and the numerous surgical techniques. This is followed by the post-surgical medical management and a discussion of the surgical outcome. Finally, selected case studies are presented, along with protocols for the storage and processing of brain tissue for molecular studies. This definitive textbook is an invaluable reference for neurologists, neurosurgeons, epilepsy specialists, and those interested in epilepsy and its surgical treatment.

Multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) has become a fundamental imaging technique for the study of many anatomical districts in different clinical situations, as it provides a fast, reliable, and accurate simultaneous evaluation of different organs, including parenchyma, hollow viscera, vessels, and bony structures. It has also equipped the radiologist with the ability to explore areas that in the last decade were largely ignored by CT, especially the coronary arteries and the colon, and to limit invasive diagnostic tests (e.g., catheter angiography) to those cases in which interventional procedures are required. The examination quality and the consequent diagnostic accuracy of MDCT are the results of an optimized study technique, which nonetheless needs to be adapted to the particular clinical situation of the patient, while bearing in mind the radiation exposure. Another fundamental parameter in the optimization of MDCT is the protocol for the intravenous injection of iodinated contrast material; in these studies, multiple variables, some modifiable by the operator and others patient-dependent, must be considered based on the aims of maximizing arterial and venous enhancements whilst minimizing the dose of iodine injected, saving money, and increasing patient safety. Through the presentation of cases addressing different anatomical regions and various clinical indications, including emergency and neuro-imaging, this volume seeks to provide the general radiologist and trainee specialist with a guide to the main study protocols to be implemented in order to optimize examination quality and, consequently, facilitate the diagnostic process.

Clinical case studies have long been recognized as a useful adjunct to problem-based learning and continuing professional development. They emphasize the need for clinical reasoning, integrative thinking, problem-solving, communication, teamwork and self-directed learning - all desirable generic skills for health care professionals. Epilepsy is amongst the most frequently encountered of neurological disorders. There are important emerging clinical management issues (e.g., first seizure, therapy-resistant seizures, ICU, pregnancy) but also differential diagnosis of non-epileptic seizures (syncopy, pseudo-seizure, paroxysmal dystonic syndromes, sleep disorders, psychosis, inborn errors of metabolism, etc.). This selection of epilepsy case studies will inform and challenge clinicians at all stages in their careers. Including both common and uncommon cases, Case Studies in Epilepsy reinforces the diagnostic skills and treatment decision-making processes necessary to treat epilepsy and other seizures confidently. Written by leading experts, the cases and discussions work through differential diagnoses, treatments and social consequences in pediatric and adult patients.
