Bununla birlikte bilim denilen devasa kurumun sosyolojik açıdan nasıl ele alınabileceği, bilime ülkemizden nasıl bakılması gerektiği ve bu bakış açısıyla ele alındığında ülkemizin ve toplumumuzun payına düşenin ne olduğu gibi esaslı sorular üzerinde pek durulduğu söylenemez. Ülkemizde bilim sosyolojisi disiplininde yapılan ilk çalışma olan Epistemik Cemaat, genelde “bilgi sosyolojisi”, özelde bilgi sosyolojisinin bir alt-dalı olarak doğan “bilim sosyolojisi” veya “bilimsel bilginin sosyolojisi” disiplini çerçevesi içinde bir denemedir. Daha genel bir söyleyişle, bir entelektüeller sosyolojisi incelemesidir. Kitabın satır aralarından, Türkiye’deki egemen bilime bakış açısının veya egemen bilim ideolojisinin ya da daha anlamlı bir söyleyişle “ortodoksi”nin eleştirisi olduğu kolayca anlaşılabilir. Antipozitivist bir entelektüel tutumu yansıtan Epistemik Cemaat, son kertede bir giriş, bir başlangıç ve bir hazırlıktır. Cevabını vermek istediği temel sorular şunlardır: Bilim ve bilimsel bilgi nedir? Bilimsel bilgi nasıl inşa edilmekte ve nasıl meşrulaştırılmaktadır?
