"The idea of "art in research" and "research as art" have risen over the past two decades as important critical focuses for the philosophy of media, aesthetics, and art. Of particular interest is how the methodologies of art and science might be merged to create a better conceptual understanding of art-based research. In this book, Dieter Mersch deconstructs and displaces the terminology that typically accompanies the question of the relationship between art and scientific truth. Identifying artistic practices as modes of thought that do not make use of language in a way that can easily be translated into scientific discourse, Mersch advocates for an aesthetic mode of thought beyond the "linguistic turn," a way of thinking that cannot be substituted by any other disciplinary system"--Back cover.

Artworks potentially convey two kinds of knowledge: knowledge of art itself as well as general empirical knowledge, especially knowledge of human psychology. This book collects ten essays written by leading philosophers who distill and build upon recent work at the intersection of aesthetics and epistemology. The volume also explores the challenges that art poses for theories of knowledge as well as the challenges that artistic knowledge poses to traditional views about art.

This volume builds on two recent developments in philosophy on the relationship between art and science: the notion of representation and the role of values in theory choice and the development of scientific theories. Its aim is to address questions regarding scientific creativity and imagination, the status of scientific performances—such as thought experiments and visual aids—and the role of aesthetic considerations in the context of discovery and justification of scientific theories. Several contributions focus on the concept of beauty as employed by practising scientists, the aesthetic factors at play in science and their role in decision making. Other essays address the question of scientific creativity and how aesthetic judgment resolves the problem of theory choice by employing aesthetic criteria and incorporating insights from both objectivism and subjectivism. The volume also features original perspectives on the role of the sublime in science and sheds light on the empirical work studying the experience of the sublime in science and its relation to the experience of understanding. The Aesthetics of Science tackles these topics from a variety of novel and thought-provoking angles. It will be of interest to researchers and advanced students in philosophy of science and aesthetics, as well as other subdisciplines such as epistemology and philosophy of mathematics.

Art as research, art-based research, and research as art have become popular issues since the 1990s. This conceptual understanding aims at combining the methods of arts and sciences, but oftentimes falls short of considering the different forms of knowledge that arts and sciences create. This essay investigates the long tradition of the philosophical struggle with and for the epistemological status of the Aesthetic and its relation to scientific truth. Its aim is to deconstruct and displace the common terminology that constitutes this struggle. Furthermore, the purpose of this essay is to identify artistic practice as a mode of thought which does not utilize language in its propositional form and therefore cannot be translated into the discursive strategies of science: an aesthetic mode of thought beyond the linguistic turn and the (self-)understanding of philosophical hermeneutics and post-structuralism, a way of thinking which cannot be substituted by any other system than itself."

Wittgenstein And Aesthetics written by Alessandro Arbo and has been published by Ontos Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Aesthetics categories.

Wittgenstein has written a great number of remarks relevant to aesthetical issues: he has questioned the relation between aesthetics and psychology as well as the status of our norms of judgement; he has drawn philosophers attention to such topics as aspect-seeing and aspect-dawning, and has brought insights into the nature of our aesthetic reactions. The examination of this wide range of topics is far from being completed, and the purpose of this book is to contribute to such completion. It gathers both papers discussing some of Wittgensteins most provocative and intriguing statements on aesthetics, and papers bringing out their implications for art critic and art history, as well as their significance to epistemology and to the study of human mind.

Aesthetics And Cognition In Kant S Critical Philosophy written by Rebecca Kukla and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-14 with Philosophy categories.

This 2006 volume explores the relationship between Kant's aesthetic theory and his critical epistemology as articulated in the Critique of Pure Reason and the Critique of the Power of Judgment. The essays, written specially for this volume, explore core elements of Kant's epistemology, such as his notions of discursive understanding, experience, and objective judgment. They also demonstrate a rich grasp of Kant's critical epistemology that enables a deeper understanding of his aesthetics. Collectively, the essays reveal that Kant's critical project, and the dialectics of aesthetics and cognition within it, is still relevant to contemporary debates in epistemology, philosophy of mind, and the nature of experience and objectivity. The book also yields important lessons about the ineliminable, yet problematic place of imagination, sensibility and aesthetic experience in perception and cognition.

Timing Of Affect written by Marie-Luise Angerer and has been published by Diaphanes this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Aesthetics categories.

For many years now, the time of affect has been a major issue in the humanities, sciences, art and media. Affect stands here for feelings, emotions, processes of affection, for movements of the bodies, for a missing time with one word: for a broad range of ideas and discursive contexts and histories. "Timing of Affect" assembles contributions from different disciplines from philosophy to film, music, sound, media and art, through to technology, computation and neurology to explore the following temporal aspects of the time of affect(ion): Affect as a capacity of the body as a primary, ontological conjunctive and disjunctive process and anthropological inscription as a zone between a "not yet" and an "always already over" as an anthropogenetic interruption of chains of stimulus and response as the effect of a zone of sensory perception that can be encoded in acts of (self-)activation in the form of feelings as an arena within cultural history for political, media and psycho-pharmacological interventions as a signal and unconscious media grammar as time scale and "out of synch." "Timing of Affect" sets itself the task of showing how these aspects are articulated historically and contemporarily, in and as different forms of discourse and epistemological implications in the current establishment of orders of knowledge, thus intensively scrutinizing the momentum of the affective today. Affect, or the process by which emotions come to be embodied, is a burgeoning area of interest in both the humanities and the sciences. For Timing of Affect, Marie-Luise Angerer, Bernd Bösel, and Michaela Ott have assembled leading scholars to explore the temporal aspects of affect through the perspectives of philosophy, music, film, media, and art, as well as technology and neurology. The contributions address possibilities for affect as a capacity of the body; as an anthropological inscription and a primary, ontological conjunctive and disjunctive processes; as an interruption of chains of s.
