The period of history covered by this volume is full both of interest and importance. It embraces about seventy years, and treats of that grave period in the history of the Greeks when Sparta overran and subdued Athens, and destroyed its rule and power everywhere. This was followed by the rise and success for a time of Thebes. It was the transition period from the glories of the Athenian Empire to the degradation of the Macedonian Conquest. The stirring events of the time are remarkably well related, and the characters of great men who took a part in the momentous struggle are well portrayed. Spartan rule was a tyrannical and corrupt rule. It was under this rule that Socrates was condemned to death, and we have placed before us a vivid picture of the causes that led to that eminent man's condemnation. The characters of the other important actors in the history of that time are equally well brought out, and the reader rises from the perusal of the work ready to carry his research further into more voluminous pages, with an increased zest in consequence of having had the whole train of events passed in a clear and rapid review before him. The Greeks carried their wars over that part of Western Asia where the Russians are now attacking the Turks, and Russians are now attacking the Turks, and the changes in modern nomenclature of the maps are so great that nothing but the conformation of the country remains the same. There are five maps and an excellent Index.

The first Persian Empire (559-331 BCE) was the biggest land empire the world had seen, and seated at the heart of its vast dominions, in the south of modern-day Iran, was the person of the Great King. Immortalized in Greek literature as despotic tyrants, a new vision of Persian monarchy is emerging from Iranian, and other, sources (literary, visual, and archaeological), which show the Kings in a very different light. Inscriptions of Cyrus, Darius, Xerxes, and their heirs present an image of Persian rulers as liberators, peace-makers, valiant warriors, righteous god-fearing judges, and law-makers.Around them the Kings established lavish and sophisticated courts, the centres of political decision-making and cultural achievements in which the image of monarchy was endorsed and advanced by an almost theatrical display of grandeur and power. This book explores the representation of Persian monarchy and the court of the Achaemenid Great Kings from the point of view of the ancient Iranians themselves and th

The first section of this volume examines the Persian empire, the regions it comprised, and its expansion under Cyrus, Darius, and Xerxes. In Greece, Sparta attained maturity as the leader of a military coalition and Athens passed through a period of enlightened tyranny to a moderate democracy of dynamic energy and intelligence. Given the contrast between Greek idealism and Persian absolutism a clash between the two empires was inevitable. Important chapters deal with the revolt of Ionian Greeks against the Persians, and the two Persian invasions of Greece including epic battles at Marathon, Tthermopylae, and Salamis. The book's third part turns to the Western Mediterranean: Italy becomes a significant factor in the area's historical development and is explored in terms of its peoples and languages from the Bronze to the Iron Ages.

"We Greeks are one in blood and one in language; we have temples to the gods and religious rites in common, and a common way of life." Herodotus Throughout the course of ancient Greek civilization, there always existed a sense of shared culture among the many Greek communities scattered throughout the Mediterranean. During the Classical (479-338) and Hellenistic (338-30) periods, the countless individual poleis of the Archaic period gradually came together in leagues and alliances, and finally were more or less united when they fell under the Roman empire. But what is fascinating about this process is how much resistance there was to it. The Greeks found it impossible to unify when faced with common enemies. Even under Roman rule the Greek cities still bickered. Acts of union — going back to the legendary Trojan War — were widely celebrated, but made little practical difference. If the Greeks knew that they were kin, why is Greek history so often the history of their internecine wars and other forms of competition with one another? This is the question acclaimed historian Robin Waterfield sets out to explore in Creators, Conquerors, and Citizens. This extraordinary contradiction — the recognition that they were all Greeks, but the deep-seated reluctance to unify — is at the heart of this ambitious new history. The culmination of a lifetime of research, Waterfield gives a comprehensive account of seven hundred years, from the emergence of the Greeks around 750 BCE to the downfall of the last of the Greco-Macedonian kingdoms in 30 BCE, looking at political, military, social, and cultural history.
