Equality and Diversity is a key theme on all policing degree courses. The book starts by contextualising equality and diversity within the legislative and policy framework. It then examines the recent historical context by outlining some of the difficulties and criticisms that the police have faced in dealing with matters of equality and diversity. It considers diversity, not only in terms of how the police relate to the general public, but also how diversity issues impact on police careers and occupational culture.

"The shift from apartheid to a constitutional democracy in South Africa brought with it a plethora of questions concerning ideas of nationhood, citizenship, and organisational transformation. Integrally caught up in the revolution, the South African Police Service (SAPS) faced transformative challenges on scales far larger than most other organisations in the country. From being the strong arm of the oppressive elite, it has had to restructure and rearticulate its function while simultaneously attempting to maintain law and order. Like many other corporations and organisations, the SAPS has engaged in interventions aimed at aiding the fluidity of this process. Andrew Faull's thesis is an analysis of one such intervention, focusing on SAPS members at one particular station. It attempts to ascertain the extent to which members are changing as a result of particular diversity workshops conducted in a region of the Western Cape. This work brings together an under-examined intersection of diversity and police cultural theory in South Africa, emphasizing the need for greater attention to these issues. The project of Student Publications has been designed by SAVUSA, NiZA and SANPAD to try and stimulate publication in the Netherlands of excellent South African MA-theses on relevant Southern African themes--Page 4 of cover.

Social, political, and economic relationships played key roles in the historical development of the police. The authors present policing strategies from the vantage points of marginalized communities and emphasize the intersection of attitudes about class, race/ ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation on policies. Police practices cannot be class-neutral in a class society, nor can they be race-neutral or gender-neutral in a racist, sexist, and heterosexist society. The key to understanding the relationship between the police and society is to think critically about the role of power and interests. The second edition includes a new chapter in the section on the police and rebellion covering recent events. There is also a new chapter on Latino/a police officers and an expanded chapter on LGBTQ police officers.Without meaningful social change toward greater justice, police reforms such as community policing and training in cultural diversity will fall short of creating an institution characterized by fairness and equality for all members of society. A clear view of history is essential for understanding the challenges a more diverse police force faces in today¿s multicultural environment.

In 1845 women entered the career of policing, and ever since it’s been an evolving history for them. There are countless stories of women shaping this career, adding particular gifts and abilities to the profession. There are, also, countless stories of their struggles to fit in and survive in this “all-boys club.” Thriving in an All Boys Club: Female Police and Their Fight for Equality examines one of the most debated issues surrounding female police officers – their ability to find acceptance in the male subculture. Through the stories of women who joined policing in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, readers learn that women’s acceptance in policing is complex and officer’s experiences are wide-ranging. Stories of resistance and harassment by colleagues, the glass ceiling in promotion, and gender specific obstacles related to pregnancy and childcare are common. Their stories show a strong sense of determination and perseverance to perform the duties of police officer. The potential for enduring change in the field of policing is growing as women continue to make strides in achieving high ranks, breaking down assignments barriers, and ensuring just opportunities for future generations of female police officers. Despite the struggles that women face to survive in the “all-boys club” of policing, women not only survive, most thrive in this almost exclusively male occupation.
