El principio de igualdad entre hombres y mujeres no ha existido siempre. La incorporación del derecho de igualdad a los distintos textos normativos, permitió que las ciudadanas fueran alcanzando paulatinamente los mismos derechos y oportunidades que el sexo masculino. El esfuerzo por conseguir la igualdad real y efectiva entre ambos sexos, originó uno de los acontecimientos más significativos dentro de la historia: la incorporación de las féminas al mundo laboral y, en especial, el ingreso a las Fuerzas y Cuerpos militares y policiales. En esta obra se hace referencia a las Fuerzas Armadas, Policía Nacional, Guardia Civil, Ertzaintza, Mossos d´Esquadra, Gendarmería nacional francesa, Arma de Carabinieri (Italia) y Guarda nacional republicana de Portugal. La presente monografía irá orientada, por tanto, a examinar la evolución de la mujer en las distintas Fuerzas y Cuerpos mencionadas, a conocer el camino que han recorrido cada una de ellas para igualar las oportunidades de su personal masculino y femenino y, de igual forma, a analizar las medidas implantadas por sus respectivos organismos de igualdad, favoreciendo la propuesta de acciones conjuntas que favorezcan alcanzar una igualdad plena.Javier de la Fuente Fernández es Doctor en Derecho por la UNED, así como Graduado en Derecho y Administración y Dirección de Empresas. Haciendo referencia a su trayectoria profesional, hay que destacar que el autor ingresó en la Academia General Militar en 2008, obteniendo el despacho de Teniente en 2013 (actualmente, es Capitán de la Guardia Civil). Durante la mayor parte de su carrera ha prestado sus servicios en la Unidad Especial de Seguridad de la Casa de S.M. el Rey. Con respecto a su formación militar dentro del Cuerpo de la Benemérita, ha realizado diversos cursos referentes a aspectos varios como: protección de personas e instalaciones, técnicas de tiro e intervención operativa. Entre estos últimos, se puede destacar el Curso de Adiestramientos Especiales.

If democratic principles do not just "rub off" onto United Nations peacekeepers, what positive or negative implications can be observed? Winner of the Luciano Tomassini Latin American Relations Book Award of the Luciano Tomassini Latin American Relations The Myth of the Democratic Peacekeeper reevaluates how United Nations peacekeeping missions reform (or fail to reform) their participating members. It investigates how such missions affect military organizations and civil-military relations as countries transition to a more democratic system. Two-thirds of the UN’s peacekeepers come from developing nations, many of which are transitioning to democracy as well. The assumption is that these “blue helmet” peacekeepers learn not only to appreciate democratic principles through their mission work but also to develop an international outlook and new ideas about conflict prevention. Arturo C. Sotomayor debunks this myth, arguing that democratic practices don’t just “rub off” on UN peacekeepers. So what, if any, benefit accrues to these troops from emerging democracies? In this richly detailed study of a decade’s worth of research (2001–2010) on Argentine, Brazilian, and Uruguayan peacekeeping participation, Sotomayor draws upon international socialization theory and civil-military relations to understand how peacekeeping efforts impact participating armed forces. He asks three questions: Does peacekeeping reform military organizations? Can peacekeeping socialize soldiers to become more liberalized and civilianized? Does peacekeeping improve defense and foreign policy integration? His evaluation of the three countries’ involvement in the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti reinforces his final analysis—that successful democratic transitions must include a military organization open to change and a civilian leadership that exercises its oversight responsibilities. The Myth of the Democratic Peacekeeper contributes to international relations theory and to substantive issues in civil-military relations and comparative politics. It provides a novel argument about how peacekeeping works and further insight into how international factors affect domestic politics as well as how international institutions affect democratizing efforts.

In a shift away from dominant interpretations, Adam David Morton considers the construction of the revolution and the modern Mexican state through a fresh analysis of the Mexican Revolution, the era of import substitution industrialization, and neoliberalism. Throughout, the author makes interdisciplinary links among geography, political economy, postcolonialism, and Latin American studies in order to provide a new framework for analyzing the development of state power in Mexico. He also explores key processes in the contestation of the modern state, specifically through studies of the role of intellectuals, democratization and democratic transition, and spaces of resistance. As Morton argues, all these themes can only be fully understood through the lens of uneven development in Latin America. Centrally, the book shows how the history of modern state formation and uneven development in Mexico is best understood as a form of passive revolution, referring to the ongoing class strategies that have shaped relations between state and civil society. As such, Morton makes an important interdisciplinary contribution to debates on state formation relevant to Mexican studies, postcolonial and development studies, historical sociology, and international political economy by revitalizing the debate on the uneven and combined character of development in Mexico and throughout Latin America.
