In this study a new view is given on the city-plan of ancient Herculaneum, by combining the evidence from the ancient writers, the 19th century explorations and the analysis of the measurements of the excavated house-blocks ('insulae'). Furthermore, it contains a detailed examination of the southernmost insulae III and IV, with surprising results. First of all the allotment of these two insulae is made visible, which gives way to a discussion about the division of land in pre-Roman Campania. Furthermore, the author distinguishes some new types of houses, which differ from the already known atrium buildings.

The Villa of the Papyri is a unique archaeological site and has been very influential in the field of classical studies. The papyri (the only intact library to survive from Greco-Roman antiquity) and bronze sculptures found in the villa have contributed to our knowledge of the ancient world and the villa has become for us the “ideal model” of Roman luxury villa culture. This volume brings together papers delivered by experts in various fields addressing the cultural significance of this ancient site in its contemporary Roman context as well as its cultural reception from its discovery over two hundred and fifty years ago to the most recent excavations in the late twentieth century. They also explore the ways in which digital archaeology can assist our efforts to understand and investigate ancient sites. Topics treated include the Villa’s architecture, decoration, and content (i.e., wall-paintings, sculptures, and papyri); their reception since the 18th century; and the current state of knowledge based on the recent partial excavations in the Villa, presented here in English for the first time. Furthermore, the use of digital models of the Villa that incorporate the data from the new excavations and a discussion on the ways in which such models may be used for educational and research purposes are also presented.

The Royal Society And The Discovery Of The Two Sicilies written by Manuela D’Amore and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-09 with History categories.

This book illuminates a lesser-known aspect of the British history of travel in the Enlightenment: that of the Royal Society’s special contribution to the “discovery” of the south of Italy in the age of the Grand Tour. By exploring primary source journal entries of philosophy and travel, the book provides evidence of how the Society helped raise the Fellows’ curiosity about the Mediterranean and encouraged travel to the region by promoting cultural events there and establishing fruitful relations with major Italian academic institutions. They were especially devoted to revealing the natural and artistic riches of the Bourbon Kingdom from 1738 to 1780, during which the Roman city of Herculaneum was discovered and Vesuvius and Etna were actively eruptive. Through these examples, the book draws attention to the role that the Royal Society played in establishing cultural networks in Italy and beyond. Tracing a complex path starting in Restoration times, this new insight into discourse on learned travel contributes to a more challenging vision of Anglo-Italian relations in the Enlightenment.

Altera Roma written by Claire L. Lyons and has been published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-31 with History categories.

Altera Roma explores the confrontation of two cultures, European and Amerindian, and two empires, Spanish and Aztec. In an age of exploration and conquest, Spanish soldiers, missionaries, and merchants brought an array of cultural preconceptions. Their encounter with Aztec civilization coincided with Europe's rediscovery of classical antiquity, and Tenochtitlan came to be regarded a "second Rome," or altera Roma. Iberia's past as the Roman province of Hispania served to both guide and critique the Spanish overseas mission. The dialogue that emerged between the Old World and the New World shaped a dual heritage into the unique culture of Nueva Espana. In this volume, ten eminent historians and archaeologists examine the analogies between empires widely separated in time and place and consider how monumental art and architecture created "theater states," a strategy that links ancient Rome, Hapsburg Spain, preconquest Mexico, and other imperial regimes.

This volume analyses in depth the reception of early Greek philosophy in the Epicurean tradition and provides for the first time in scholarship a comprehensive edition, with translation and commentary, of all the Herculanean testimonia to the Presocratics. Among the most significant scientific outcomes, it provides elements for the attribution of an earlier date to the attested tradition of Xenophanes’ scepticism; a complete reconstruction of the Epicurean reception of Democritus; a new reconstruction of the testimonia to Nausiphanes’ concept of physiologia, Anaxagoras’ physics and theology, and Empedocles’ epistemology; new texts for better comparing the doxographical sections of Philodemus’ On Piety with those of Cicero’s On the Nature of the Gods, which update H. Diels’ treatment of this subject in his Doxographi Graeci.

A Catalog Of Identifiable Figure Painters Of Ancient Pompeii Herculaneum And Stabiae written by Lawrence Richardson and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Art categories.

A herculean effort to identify the hands of individual wall painters who worked in Pompeii and the surrounding area. How did figure painting fit into the economic and artistic life of Pompeii? Did the best painters work in conjunction with one another? Did they paint only the important pictures in the best rooms and, if so, who painted the rest? Were the best houses the showplaces for these painters' work? If not, what was the function of these decorations in Pompeian life? L. Richardson, jr, has had a long and distinguished career writing about Roman art and architecture, particularly that of the companion town of Pompeii and its environs. In this newest work, he attributes many of the surviving wall decorations to particular painters. It is a catalog in the true sense, grouping the pictures by style and then by painter. Richardson describes the salient characteristics of a painter's work, and then inventories the pictures he attributes to that painter, together with cross-references to other catalogs and sources of good reproductions. The book will serve as a valuable resource for specialists in classics and art history, as well as a unique guide for intellectually adventurous tourists visiting the Museo Nazionale at Naples and the sites of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae.
