Erehdysten komedia on Shakespearen varhaisvuosien huima farssi kahdesta parista eroon joutuneita kaksosia. Sekaannukset alkavat, kun he osuvat yhtä aikaa samaan kaupunkiin, ja sukulaiset ja ystävät sotkevat saman nimiset ja näköiset veljekset keskenään kerran jos toisenkin. Ennen kuin miesten outoon käytökseen saadaan selitys, moni pää menee pyörälle, ja syytä etsitään niin haureudesta, hulluudesta kuin paholaisestakin. William Shakespearen syntymäpäivästä ei ole säilynyt tarkkaa tietoa, mutta hänet kastettiin synnyinkaupungissaan Stratford-on-Avonissa 26.4.1564 oletettavasti muutaman päivän ikäisenä, ja hänen merkkipäivänään pidetään yleisesti huhtikuun 23:tta. Hän syntyi melko varakkaaseen perheeseen ja kävi paikallista latinakoulua ainakin muutaman vuoden. Vuonna 1582, ollessaan 18-vuotias, hän meni naimisiin 26-vuotiaan Anne Hathawayn kanssa. Perheeseen syntyi kolme lasta, Susanna 1583 ja vuonna 1585 kaksoset, tytär Judith ja myöhemmin 11-vuotiaana kuollut poika Hamnet. Monilta osin Shakespearen vaiheista ja toimista ei ole täsmällistä tietoa, mutta 1590-luvulla hän alkoi saavuttaa mainetta Lontoon teatteripiireissä. Ensimmäiset painetut teokset olivat runoelmia, ja useimmat näytelmät ilmestyivät painettuina vasta tekijän kuoleman jälkeen kootuissa teoksissa, ns. ensimmäisessä foliopainoksessa 1623. Teattereissa niitä kuitenkin esitettiin paljon, ja uusia näytelmiä syntyi tiuhaan, joskus kolmekin vuodessa. Ensimmäinen Shakespearen kirjoittamaksi tiedetty näytelmä on vuonna1592 esitetty Henrik VI. Shakespeare kuului myös teatteriseurueisiin ja oli yksi Globe-teatterin omistajista. Todennäköisesti viimeinen näytelmä on 1611 ensiesityksensä saanut Myrsky, mutta senkin jälkeen hän kirjoitti muutamia näytelmiä yhteistyössä toisten näytelmäkirjailijoiden kanssa. 1610-luvulla hän jätti Lontoon ja teatterin ja vetäytyi Stratfordiin, missä hän kuoli 52-vuotiaana 23.4.1616.

Egeon, a merchant of Syracuse, is condemned to death in Ephesus for violating the ban against travel between the two rival cities. As he is led to his execution, he tells the Ephesian Duke, Solinus, that he has come to Syracuse in search of his wife and one of his twin sons, who were separated from him 25 years ago in a shipwreck. The other twin, who grew up with Egeon, is also traveling the world in search of the missing half of their family. (The twins, we learn, are identical, and each has an identical twin slave named Dromio.) The Duke is so moved by this story that he grants Egeon a day to raise the thousand-mark ransom that would be necessary to save his life. Meanwhile, unknown to Egeon, his son Antipholus of Syracuse (and Antipholus' slave Dromio) is also visiting Ephesus--where Antipholus' missing twin, known as Antipholus of Ephesus, is a prosperous citizen of the city. Adriana, Antipholus of Ephesus' wife, mistakes Antipholus of Syracuse for her husband and drags him home for dinner, leaving Dromio of Syracuse to stand guard at the door and admit no one.
