Benjamins kurzer Essay "Erfahrung und Armut" aus dem Jahr 1933 bietet rückblickend einen guten Einstieg, um konstitutive Elemente des Umbruchs zu verstehen, der heute mit dem Begriff der "Moderne" beschrieben wird. Seine Überlegungen in dieser Abhandlung zur Erfahrungsarmut thematisieren grundlegende Phänomene, die im kulturellen Schatten des 1. Weltkriegs eine Vielzahl von unterschiedlichsten Künstlern, Schriftstellern und Denkern umtrieben - um mit Hofmannsthal, Kafka, Simmel, Spengler oder Heidegger nur einige zu nennen. Allen gemeinsam war die Einschätzung an einem epochalen Wendepunkt der kulturellen Entwicklung zu stehen, die die Notwendigkeit eines Neubeginns erfordere. Wie bei allen Werken der ofd edition wurde die ursprüngliche Textfassung nicht automatisiert kopiert, sondern sorgfältig neu editiert und der aktuellen Rechtschreibung angepasst - für ein besseres Verständnis und eine leichtere Lesbarkeit. Eine Einführung erläutert den historischen Hintergrund und Interpretationsansätze.

Staging History analyzes the commitment to social change present in the theatrical and theoretical writings of Bertolt Brecht. Challenging previous notions, Astrid Oesmann argues that Brecht's work was less dependent on Marxist ideology than is often assumed and that his work should be seen as a coherent whole. Brecht used the stage to release political ideas into experimental spaces in which actors and spectators could explore the relationships between abstract thought and concrete social life. Oesmann places Brecht within the context of the major leftist theorists of the twentieth century, particularly Adorno, Benjamin, and Lukàcs, focusing on their discussions of realism, aesthetics, natural history, and mimesis. Oesmann elaborates upon the vision of a "counter-public sphere" in a number of Brecht's theoretical texts and plays—especially The Three Penny Trial and Fear and Misery of the Third Reich—that present the emergence of such a sphere in the face of fascism. By exploring Brecht's theoretical writings, selected plays, and recently published theatrical fragments, Oesmann reveals unpredictable constructions of history and surprising distinctions among various political ideologies, while also proving that Brecht remains vitally relevant to a "post-communist" world.

The unsettling context of late modernity, a terrain of an infinite fragmentation of life, poses a challenge to Christianity to rearticulate its defining doctrine of the Trinity. Christianity's initial messianic weakness_in that its canonical writings attest to a universal message of redemption for the victims of Empire_was subverted into the strong theology of the Empire. This book demonstrates that Trinitarian discourse was profoundly implicated in this development as it essentially absorbed and took the bite out of the messianic language of the early Christian movement. Zathureczky proposes a retrieval of the messianic discourse of Christianity by way of recapturing its redemptive weakness. Relying on an elective affinity between Walter Benjamin's messianism and JYrgen Moltmann Trinitarianism, he attempts to recapture the 'weakness' and fragility of the language of the initial messianic impulse of the Christian community. The resulting 'weak' Trinitarianism retains the basic character of Christianity as a Trinitarian faith, but now Trinitarian discourse about God is simultaneously messianic discourse, a language that is attuned to give voice to the damaged lives and alienating conditions of our contemporary context.

Als in den 80er Jahren die "neue Armut" infolge Langzeitarbeitslosigkeit in den alten Bundesländern öffent lich aufgegriffen und in den 90er Jahren die Verarmung weiter Bevölkerungsgruppen in der Transformation der neuen Bundesländer "entdeckt" wurde, bestand die Antwort weniger darin, verstärkt sozialwissenschaftliehe Analysen zu unternehmen - was in kleinerem Umfang gleichwohl geschah -, sondern vor allem darin, die politische wie 1 moralische SkandaIisierung zu intensivieren. In England wie in den USA2 hat sich eine andere Forschungstradition herausge bildet, die durch eine breite, kontinuierliche und fundierte Beschäftigung in den So zialwissenschaften - unterstützt von der Geschichtswis~nschaft - mit Armut und 3 Sozialpolitik gekennzeichnet ist. Peter Townsends "Poverty in the United Kingdom" (1979) oder William Julius Wilsons "The Truly Disadvantaged: The Inner City, the Underclass, and Public Policy" (1987) gelten dort als "Klassiker"--Als Studien, die wissenschaftliche Standards setzten und auch außerhalb der Soziologie ein breites Publikum fanden, als Untersuchungen, die nachhaltige Diskussionen und vielfältige Forschungsinitiativen auslösten. Eine vergleichbare sozialwissenschaftliche Studie sucht man in Deutschland nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg vergebens.
