'The frequent reference to nobility in literary texts as well as in the biographies of many authors of Romanticism is astonishing - whereas around 1800 nobility as a political concept had long been on the defensive. Analyses of texts of Novalis, Tieck, Kleist, Brentano, Eichendorff etc. show that aspects of meaning of "nobility" - such as "play", "gift economy", "chivalry" and "genealogy" - contribute to the concept of self-referential Romantic poetry. Moreover, at the threshold of modern authorship, the Romanticists oscillated between nobility due to birth and aristocratic distance to the literary market.

Der unverwechselbare Beitrag der Romantik zur Ideengeschichte, so die Hauptthese dieser Arbeit, liegt in ihrer den dialektischen Schematismus entgrenzenden Pluralektik, die sich mit mythologischer Motivik verband, im Roman exponierte und in der poetischen Musik selbst besang.

Die Individualpsychologie Alfred Adlers ist eine der drei klassischen tiefenpsychologischen Schulen. Im Zentrum ihrer Theorie stehen Fragen des Selbstwertes, indem die Aufmerksamkeit auf das Minderwertigkeitsgefühl als Grundbefindlichkeit der kindlichen Seele gelenkt wird, das durch das Streben nach sozialer Gleichwertigkeit, nach Geltung und Macht kompensiert wird. Dabei stellt Adlers Theorie eine bemerkenswerte Mischung aus egalitär-aufklärerischem und psychoanalytischem Denken dar und ist im Gegensatz zu den Lehren Sigmund Freuds und Carl Gustav Jungs eher konstruktivistisch orientiert. Dennoch wurde der Individualpsychologie bisher vonseiten der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit zuteil. Der vorliegende Sammelband möchte daher den potentiellen Ertrag der Adler'schen Lehre sowohl für die Erzählforschung als auch für die Literaturwissenschaft deutlich machen und darlegen, dass sie durch das Einbringen einer zusätzlichen Perspektive eine Bereicherung für die Textinterpretation darstellt, der bisher zu wenig Beachtung zuteilwurde.

This volume is the twelfth to date in a series of works in French or English presenting the epochs and movements of a Comparative History of Literatures in European Languages (Histoire Comparée des Littératures de Langues Européennes). The original intention of the editors was to publish a four-volume history of European literature from 1760-1820, and the first of these volumes, Des Lumières au Romantisme. Genres en Vers, appeared as long ago as 1982. The volumes Genres en Prose and Théâtre are still awaited. In their absence the present volume, Epoche im _berblick, attempts a more comprehensive and rigorous treatment of the period and its historiographical problems than was initially planned, providing the reader with an overview of sixty eventful years of European literary history years in which German Classicism coincided with the birth, initially in Germany and England, of Romanticism.
