The objective of this volume is not to seek out the historical Jesus behind the Gospel, but rather to make audible the polyphonic recollections of Jesus through the continuities and discontinuities of the tales handed down in the New Testament. Das biblische Bild der Jesus-Zeit bieten die vier Evangelien des Neuen Testaments: Matthäus, Markus, Lukas und Johannes. Allerdings handelt es sich bei ihnen um narrative Texte, nicht um historische Monographien. Dies bedeutet komplexe Analysen für die Rekonstruktion des historischen Bildes der Epoche, insbesondere für das Bild vom historischen Jesus selbst, wie die Geschichte der Forschung seit dem 18. Jh. bis in die Gegenwart hinein zeigt. Im Mittelpunkt des Buches steht die modernste internationale historische Jesusforschung, die sog. "third quest" und ihre Ergebnisse. Das bedeutet auch, dass die jüngsten Untersuchungen zum antiken Judentum berücksichtigt werden, da sie für die Interpretation der Position Jesu und der Jesusbewegung innerhalb des Judentums zu völlig neuen Einschätzungen geführt haben. Behandelt wird ferner die Problematisierung der kulturellen Prägung der historischen Jesusfrage als Kind der Aufklärung und damit der westlichen Kultur.
