Die Erklärung und Verteidigung der Klarissen-Regel, die der Franziskaner Augustin von Al-veldt OFM 1533/34 für die Klarissen zu Eger (heute: Cheb/Tschechien) schrieb, folgte in en-gem Zusammenhang der Verteidigung der Franziskus-Regel, die Alveldt 1532 vollendet hat-te (vgl. Quellen zur franziskanischen Geschichte, Band 2). Es war vermutlich die Kenntnis dieser damals ungedruckten Schrift, die die Äbtissin des Klarissenklosters zu Eger, Ursula Gräfin Schlick, veranlasste, den ehemaligen Provinzialminister der Sächsischen Franziska-ner-Provinz vom Heiligen Kreuz dringend um eine Erklärung und Verteidigung der für ihr Kloster maßgebenden Regel zu bitten. Im Gegensatz zur oft kommentierten Franziskus-Regel war die Klarissen-Regel anscheinend selbst manchen Schwestern in ihrer Bedeutung und in ihrer Verbindlichkeit nicht völlig klar. Das zeigte sich in der kurzen Widmung und in der längeren Einleitung zu Alveldts Erklärung und Verteidigung der Klarissen-Regel. Das Manuskript des vollständigen lateinischen Textes von Alveldts Erklärung zur Klarissen-Regel befindet sich heute in der Bibliothek des Bayerischen Nationalmuseums zu München und ist hier erstmals vollständig und mit deutscher Übersetzung wiedergegeben.

Emanating from the tradition of the Italian hermit communities the Franciscans developed organisational structures already early in their history, allowing them to offer pastoral care on a wide scale. This process of transition led firstly to constitutional structures as defined in the order's early legislation but it also occurred within relationship networks at different levels, in the context of Church and papacy, within the different European regions and before the background of the emerging Canon Law. The term "organisation" has been given a wide definition in the articles published in this volume. They offer a survey of general issues related to the structuring and running of religious orders as well as a number of case studies. Comparisons with other mendicant orders offer an analysis of the issues in a wider context.
