The book offers an innovative approach to the study of Ernest Hemingway’s fiction and biography. It juxtaposes two perspectives that have been underrepresented in Hemingway studies so far: translation and interview. The book is divided into three sections which mirror the key words in the title: interview and translation. Section One explores the “last” interviews with Hemingway in their historical context of the Cold War. Section Two focuses on the achievement of Bronisław Zieliński, Hemingway’s Polish translator and friend, who is hardly known outside Poland. The section gives a detailed account of their correspondence in the years 1958-1961. Section Three is an account of experiments in translating Hemingway’s famous story “Cat in the Rain” (1925) by groups of Polish university students. Its aim is to illustrate the extent to which literary translation may influence the construction of the text’s meaning.

These firsthand interviews and newspaper accounts constitute a valuable edition to the sizable and ever-growing Hemingway shelf. They let Papa speak his mind, and the inimitable Hemingway voice comes through clearly: the boastfulness, the fierce ambition, the love of prizefighting and the bullring, the snappish impatience with questions (and questioners) he didn't like, and the high seriousness and dedication to his craft. The pieces from the early days are largely short snippets from newspapers; it is only later - from the 1940s on - that Hemingway begins to get the star treatment from publications such as the New Yorker or George Plimpton's Paris Review. Consequently the best comes last. A splendid, delicious book - for Hemingway fans, one well worth savoring.

The conversations gathered here--spanning her emergence on the Hollywood scene to just days before her death at age 36--show Monroe at her sharpest and most insightful on the thorny topics of ambition, fame, femininity, desire, and more. Together with an introduction by Sady Doyle, these pieces reveal yet another Marilyn: not the tragic heroine she's become in the popular imagination, but a righteously and justifiably angry figure breaking free of the limitations the world forced on her.

The newest entry in the increasingly popular series collects fascinating and in-depth interviews with Bill Moyers, Nina Totenberg, and more, and conversations (with Antonin Scalia and high school students) from throughout the long, ground-breaking career of one of the greatest, most influential, and most exciting legal minds in American history. From her start in Depression-era New York, to her final days at the pinnacle of the American legal system, Ruth Bader Ginsburg defied convention, blazing a trail that helped bring greater equality to women, and to all Americans. In this collection of in-depth interviews -- including her last, as well as one of her first -- Ginsburg details her rise from a Brooklyn public school to becoming the second woman on the United States Supreme Court, and her non-stop fight for gender equality along the way. Besides telling the story behind many of her famous court battles, she also talks openly about motherhood and her partnership with her beloved husband, her Jewishness, her surprising friendship with her legal polar opposite Justice Antonin Scalia, her passion for opera, and, in one of the collection's most charming interviews, offers advice to high school students wondering about the law. It is, in the end, both an engrossing look into a fascinating life, and an inspiring tribute to an American icon.
