Ernesto, undici anni, si trasferisce con i genitori a Portamare, luogo di nascita della nonna. Cinquecento anni prima, Portamare fu un ricco principato, al centro di importanti scambi commerciali, poiché situato in una porzione di costa tranquilla e fertile, vicina alle "bocche dell'oceano". Un brutto giorno la città venne assaltata dai pirati, che ne depredarono i beni e i tesori, distruggendo la cittadella del vecchio porto e uccidendo il maresciallo Donato Malassi. Il mondo in cui si svolgono le vicende è regolato da energie naturali in equilibrio con forze oscure, create dai sentimenti negativi e dall'eccessivo attaccamento ai beni materiali. Prima dell'arrivo dei pirati, Gigliola, moglie del maresciallo, era in grado di mantenere questo equilibrio attraverso la magia, ma la crudeltà dei pirati e la conseguente sofferenza dei cittadini di Portamare crearono degli importanti turbamenti energetici, manifestabili alla gente comune attraverso rari fenomeni atmosferici. Negli anni, la donna riuscì in parte a ripristinare l'equilibrio naturale, anche grazie all'aiuto di un ragazzino, fuggito da una nave dei pirati. Cinquecento anni dopo, Ernesto e Jonathan continuano il lavoro di Gigliola, con l'aiuto di alcuni oggetti antichi e magici. Jonathan appare alla gente di Portamare come uno strano commerciante del mercato, che vende oggetti antichi e vecchie cianfrusaglie, apparentemente inutili. In realtà è un pirata redento in incognito, che viene dal passato. L'uomo è figlio di pirati e sta cercando di eliminare tutti i residui dell'energia oscura di cui si sente ancora impregnato, con l'aiuto di Ernesto, che rappresenta "quell'energia nuova che fa funzionare cose vecchie". Ernesto si muove in un paesaggio apparentemente comune, in cui scopre luoghi misteriosi e fantastici, intesse meravigliose amicizie, conosce persone affascinanti e vive avventure straordinarie, nella cornice colorata e ricca di natura di Portamare. Vecchie questioni ancora irrisolte si ripresentano dal passato, ma con un aiuto inaspettato, Ernesto e Jonathan riescono a ristabilire l'equilibrio naturale delle cose, in un finale sorprendente.
