Antonio Mottola ha maturato per trentacinque anni nella Diocesi di Cerignola-Ascoli Satriano a contatto con le persone immigrate ha determinato in lui la ricerca di un nuovo approccio pastorale, nel tentativo di promuovere una dignitosa convivenza umana fra le etnie. Nell’attuale crisi antropologica della società brilla come stella polare una definizione della Gaudium et Spes: “Chiunque segue Cristo, si fa pure lui più uomo” (n.41). Da qui parte l’autore nel sognare un “nuovo umanesimo” dove conta l’uomo non come individuo, ma come persona chiamata a tessere relazioni umane per l’edificazione di una società civile e di una comunità ecclesiale più fraterne. Il sogno del “nuovo umanesimo” trova il suo humus valoriale nell’insegnamento sociale della Chiesa ed in particolare nell’enciclica “Caritas in Veritate” di Papa Benedetto XVI, nella filosofia personalista e negli studi delle Scienze Sociali. La “relazionalità” diviene la matrice, presente in tutto il libro, che orienta il lettore a valorizzare l’identità etnica, la cultura, la lingua e la religione di tutti i popoli.
