Chi sono stati nella vita di tutti i giorni gli “eroi” della Grande Guerra? Come andarono al fronte, che cosa scrivevano, che cosa hanno lasciato dietro di sé i protagonisti più conosciuti della prima guerra mondiale? Gli “eroi” raccontati da Brogi passano dall’interventismo estremo del bersagliere-ciclista Enrico Toti, all’irredentismo di Cesare Battisti, Fabio Filzi, Damiano Chiesa, ai letterati prestati al fronte come Enrico Serra e Scipio Slataper, per arrivare ai giovanissimi come Roberto Sarfatti figlio di Margherita, nota come la prima amante di Mussolini. E ancora ecco Alberto Cadlolo, Giacomo Venezian, il Milite Ignoto. Ma anche gli Arditi e poi gli Arditi del Popolo con Guido Picelli. Ci sono pure le medaglie d’oro al valore militare, da Francesco Baracca agli altri “assi” della nascente aviazione italiana come Pier Ruggero Piccio, Fulco Ruffo di Calabria, Silvio Scaroni, all’umbro Venanzio Gabriotti che si guadagnò quattro medaglie d’argento e bronzo e che quella d’oro l’ha infine aggiunta nel 1944 facendosi fucilare dai nazifascisti come membro della Resistenza. Le figure più conosciute e quelle meno note, compresi gli esempi di eroismo dalla parte austriaca, come Sepp Innerkofler, sono qui rivisitati con gli strumenti critici dell’oggi. La guerra, però, non produsse solo eroi ma anche folli e l’ultima parte di questo lavoro racchiude una ricca rassegna sui soldati usciti di senno nella Grande Guerra e rinchiusi nei manicomi d’Italia, un esercito di matti composto da 40 mila reclute provenienti dagli orrori del fronte, attraverso una ricerca su documenti inediti come le cartelle cliniche rintracciate nell’archivio dell’ospedale psichiatrico di Cogoleto a Genova. Paolo Brogi, giornalista, ha lavorato a «Reporter», «L’Europeo» e al «Corriere della Sera». Ha pubblicato, per Aliberti editore, La lunga notte dei Mille grande successo di critica e di pubblico. Gli “eroi” della Grande Guerra. Die Heimatpflege des Bezirks Schwaben, die Schwabenakademie Irsee und das Bildungswerk des Bayerischen Bezirketags führten zusammen mit der Klinik für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie II der Universität Ulm im Jahr 2016 eine Tagung zum Thema "Psychiatrie im Ersten Weltkrieg" durch. Der Bezirk Schwaben errichtete im Jahr 1849 im ehemaligen Kloster Irsee eine psychiatrische Heil- und Pflegeanstalt. Sie wurde später erweitert, ihre Patientenakten sind erhalten. Aus der Zeit des Ersten Weltkriegs sind dort über 100 psychisch kranke Soldaten nachgewiesen. Die internationale Tagung untersuchte, wie in der psychiatrischen Praxis mit den psychisch traumatisierten Soldaten in Deutschland, Österreich, Frankreich, England und Italien umgegangen wurde. Nach dem deutschen Heeressanitätsbericht wurden 613.047 Soldaten wegen Nervenleiden behandelt, davon 313.000 neurologisch Traumatisierte. Die neue Waffentechnik und der Stellungskrieg hatten die Soldaten vorher nicht bekannten, lang andauernden Belastungen ausgesetzt, die ihre Opfer forderten. Zum Gesamtkomplex der Kriegspsychiatrie gehört auch das Hungersterben in den Heil- und Pflegeanstalten. Die Tagung fragte auch nach dem heutigen Stand der Forschung bezüglich psychischer Krankheitssymptome in Folge von Kriegsereignissen.
