Pergulatan panjang mereka secara sadar atau tidak telah menghasilkan berbagai sistem kehidupan baru seperti sistem politik, sistem ekonomi, sistem sosial, sistem seni-budaya, sistem nilai, sistem IPTEK, sistem hukum, sistem ideologi dan sistem hubungan antar bangsa, dan banyak lagi yang dewasa ini banyak diambil, dan dikembangkan bahkan oleh bangsa-bangsa di luar Eropa. Buku ini ditulis dengan maksud mengantar para mahasiswa sejarah khususnya dan para peminat sejarah umumnya, menelusuri liku-liku perjalanan terjal dan rumit bangsa-bangsa Eropa, dari titik paling bawah ketika mereka masih merupakan suku-suku "barbar" sampai akhirnya disebut sebagai bangsa modern yang pertama di dunia. Kita dapat belajar banyak dari bangsa-bengsa Eropa untuk dapat menjadi bangsa yang modern.

Tulisan ini ingin mengajak para pembaca menelusuri sejarah perjalanan bangsa-bangsa Eropa yang dalam mempertahankan eksistensinya sebagai negara bangsa dan entitas - bangsa, bergulat mempertahankan keunikan jati dirinya dengan bahaya, atau menenggelamkan jati diri negara bangsa tersebut dalam kebersamaan super state dengan kemungkinan lenyapnya jati diri sebagai bangsa dalam kancah terbentuknya identitas baru yang masih belum jelas. Pengalaman sejarah bangsa-bangsa Eropa, yang telah mengarungi berbagai perang besar dan kecil, khususnya dengan PD II, telah menyadarkan mereka betapa pentingnya hidup damai, sejahtera dan berkesinambungan dengan cara bergabung dalam kerangka kerjasama yang lebih luas daripada dibelenggu oleh keangkuhan negara bangsa. Bangsa-bangsa Eropa mulai berpaling dari wahana negara bangsa ke wahana yang lebih besar, yang untuk sementara waktu belum mendapat bentuk akhir tetapi mulai memperoleh nama yaitu Uni Eropa. Langkah besar pertama untuk membentuk wahana besar itu terjadi ketika mereka menyepakati Perjanjian Roma 1957, yang melahirkan apa yang disebut dengan Masyarakat Ekonomi Eropa (MEE). MEE jelas bukan sebuah negara tetapi sebuah organisasi yang mengatur kehidupan bersama (pada mulanya 6 negara) dalam bidang sosial - ekonomi. Setelah kurang lebih tiga puluh tahun MEE menjadi wadah resmi kerjasama dari 6 negara kemudian menjadi 12 negara, melalui perjanjian Maastricht tahun 1991 ke 12 negara anggota MEE sepakat untuk meningkatkan ruang lingkup kerjasama, tidak saja dalam bidang sosial – ekonomi, tetapi juga dalam bidang moneter, hukum, politik dan keamanan. Berbagai perundingan dan pentahapan yang rumit akhirnya ke 12 negara sepakat untuk membentuk Uni Eropa dan dalam bidang moneter meluncurkan mata uang tunggal yang bernama Euro. Pentingnya sebuah hukum dasar bagi eksistensi Uni Eropa, maka konstitusi diluncurkan pada tahun 2004. Dari isi konstitusi nampak jelas bahwa Uni Eropa merupakan sebuah negara bahkan sebuah “super state”. Syahnya konstitusi memerlukan persetujuan rakyat oleh karenanya sepanjang tahun 2004 sampai tahun 2005 proses rafifikasi Konstitusi Uni Eropa tidaklah berjalan mulus, sampai akhir tahun 2005 ada sejumlah negara yang menolaknya. Dan menurut sebuah pasal konstitusi, jika sebuah negara anggota menolak meratifikasi maka gugurlah konstitusi tersebut. Bagaimana nasib selanjutnya Konstitusi Uni Eropa, sejarah yang akan mencatatnya.

What effect has globalization had on our understanding of literacy? Grassroots Literacy seeks to address the relationship between globalization and the widening gap between ‘grassroots’ literacies, or writings from ordinary people and local communities, and ‘elite’ literacies. Displaced from their original context to elite literacy environments in the form of letters, police declarations and pieces of creative writing, ‘grassroots’ literacies are unsurprisingly easily disqualified, either as ‘bad’ forms of literacy, or as messages that fail to be understood. Through close analysis of two unique, handwritten documents from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Jan Blommaert considers how ‘grassroots’ literacy in the Third World develops outside the literacy-saturated environments of the developed world. In examining these documents produced by socially and economically marginalized writers Blommaert demonstrates how literacy environments should be understood as relatively autonomous systems. Grassroots Literacy will be key reading for students of language and literacy studies as well as an invaluable resource for anyone with an interest in understanding the implications of globalization on local literacy practices.

Based on a reading of classical Islamic literature, the writings of modem Muslims and on extensive travel and interviews, this book discusses ways in which Muslim peoples adapt themselves to a world composed of sovereign nation-states, having peaceful and equal relations with both non-Muslim states and collectivities of other Muslims. The classical and medieval legal theory of Islam appears to place two obstacles in the way of such adaptations; it divides the world into two areas, Muslim and non-Muslim, between which relations can at best be those of truce; and it demands that the life of societies should be regulated by the will of God as revealed in the Qu'ran, not by the will of rulers or of the people. Dr Piscatori shows that the traditional theory provides for some degree of territorial pluralism, which has been clearly reflected in the historical experience whereby stable nation-states have emerged and become part of the international order.

The crisis of multiculturalism in the West and the failure of the Arab uprisings in the Middle East have pushed the question of how to live peacefully within a diverse society to the forefront of global discussion. Against this backdrop, Indonesia has taken on a particular importance: with a population of 265 million people (87.7 percent of whom are Muslim), Indonesia is both the largest Muslim-majority country in the world and the third-largest democracy. In light of its return to electoral democracy from the authoritarianism of the former New Order regime, some analysts have argued that Indonesia offers clear proof of the compatibility of Islam and democracy. Skeptics argue, however, that the growing religious intolerance that has marred the country’s political transition discredits any claim of the country to democratic exemplarity. Based on a twenty-month project carried out in several regions of Indonesia, Indonesian Pluralities: Islam, Citizenship, and Democracy shows that, in assessing the quality and dynamics of democracy and citizenship in Indonesia today, we must examine not only elections and official politics, but also the less formal, yet more pervasive, processes of social recognition at work in this deeply plural society. The contributors demonstrate that, in fact, citizen ethics are not static discourses but living traditions that co-evolve in relation to broader patterns of politics, gender, religious resurgence, and ethnicity in society.
