Eros: The Myth of Ancient Greek Sexuality is a controversial book that lays bare the meanings Greeks gave to sex. Contrary to the romantic idealization of sex dominating our culture, the Greeks saw eros as a powerful force of nature, potentially dangerous, and in need of control by society: Eros the Destroyer, not Cupid the Insipid, fired the Greek imagination. The destructiveness of eros can be seen in Greek imagery and metaphor, and in the Greeks' attitudes toward women and homosexuals. Images of love as fire, disease, storms, insanity, and violence?Top 40 song clichfor us?locate eros among the unpredictable and deadly forces of nature. The beautiful Aphrodite embodies the alluring danger of sex, while femmes fatales like Pandora and Helen represent the risky charms of female sexuality. And homosexuality typifies for the Greeks the frightening power of an indiscriminate appetite that threatens the stability of culture itself. In Eros: The Myth of Ancient Greek Sexuality, Bruce Thornton offers a uniquely sweeping and comprehensive account of ancient sexuality free of currently fashionable theoretical jargon and pretentions. In its conclusions the book challenges the distortions of much recent scholarship on Greek sexuality. And throughout it links the wary attitudes of the Greeks to our present-day concerns about love, sex, and family. What we see, finally, are the origins of some of our own views as well as a vision of sexuality that is perhaps more honest and mature than our own dangerous illusions.

I have written this book because it was inevitable. Sexual love had to be viewed and approached from another angle. It is the subject of our time, even if the slogans proclaimed about it sometimes sound different. The theme of sexual longing is the focal point of our inner thoughts and feelings. More people today suffer from a sexuality which they are unable to cope with than from environmental poisons. In whatever area I have been involved in life, whether in revolutionary groups of the student movement, in the emerging alternative movement of the seventies, or in my work as professor and therapist, in the end I always encountered this subject. Up to now, the attempts to solve it in communes or through experiments of free love have failed. The various therapeutic or spiritual approaches have not helped much either. The core of the problem is intrinsically linked to our daily thought and behavioral patterns. It therefore cannot be viewed or solved while at the same time maintaining these habits. People say that the sexual revolution is over. Inside of us however, it has really not yet even begun. The previous attempts were too disoriented and too emotional to lead to the center of the problem. At the beginning it does not have to do with revolution, but rather with recognition.I have written this book for love, even where I have had to show its dark spots. So that such passages do not get too heavy, I have at times chosen a lighter tone. I hope that the book can be read and understood by all ages. If one does not understand everything immediately, it is not so important, since it will become clear later. I would like to demonstrate that there exists a realistic possibility for love between the genders which is free of disguise, fear and jealousy. I would like to encourage all of those readers and lovers who can follow this train of thought to find this possibility within themselves and to act upon it. If there is a future for us and our children that is worth living, then it is to be found in a new form of sensual love.It is not necessary to read the book from beginning to end. One should begin at the most interesting point addressed in the table of contents. Those who find the negative balance in the first few chapters to be too much should not restrain from skipping these pages and instead begin by reading the more enjoyable aspects first. By doing so, no important theory will be missed, since almost every section creates its own context which is understandable without further explanation. Despite the gravity of the subject, I do not wish the readers of this book any new nightmares, but rather genuine hope and anticipation. Love is no longer a fairytale; if we understand it, we can make it come true.I dedicate this book to all who love, to all who are on their way to new shores with hearts ready to love: all who are seeking true faithfulness which no longer forces anyone to lie. I dedicate it to the children who will come after us, to the animals and plants that need protection and to comradeship of the human being. I dedicate it to the peace workers who do not let themselves be distracted by over-hasty spiritual slogans and half-truths, but instead are ready to face the incorruptibility of life itself. In the service of warmth for all that has skin and fur.~ Dieter Duhm

Discover the secret relationship between erotic, the sexual, and the sacred Sex is not negative or positive. Sex is not just neutral, nor is it merely sacred because it creates babies. None of these old sexual stories work for us anymore. We need a new sexual narrative. This book gives the new sexual narrative, what the authors call Sex Erotic. Erotic Mystics from the hidden tradition of Solomon's temple taught a secret doctrine: sex is the source of all wisdom. It's an expression of the erotic impulse of existence itself alive in us–the yearning for contact, pleasure, and aliveness. The sexual, however, is not the sum total of the erotic. Rather, the sexual teaches us how to live an erotic life in all dimensions of our existence. That is Sex Erotic. A Return to Eros: The Radical Experience of Being Fully Alive, from Drs. Marc Gafni and Kristina Kincaid, reveals the radical tenets of the relationships between the sexual, the erotic, and the holy. They share what Eros actually means and also the 12 core qualities of the erotic, which are modeled by the sexual. These include being on the inside, fullness of presence, yearning, allurement, fantasy, surrender, creativity, pleasure, and more. A Return to Eros shows why these qualities of the erotic modeled by the sexual are actually the same core qualities of the sacred. The relationship between the sexual and the erotic becomes clear, teaching you how to live an erotically suffused existence charged with purpose, potency, and power. To be an empowered lover—not just in sex but also in all facets of your life—you must listen to the whisperings of the sexual. Transform your understanding and experience of love, sex, and Eros inside these pages.

Issues of gender and sexuality have recently come to the fore in all humanities disciplines, and this book reflects this broad interdisciplinary situation, although its own standpoint is broadly theological. In contrast to many contemporary feminist theologies, gender and sexuality (eros) are here understood within a distinctively Christian context characterized by the reality of agape - the New Testament's term for the comprehensive divine-human love that includes the relationship of man and woman within its scope. The central problem is concern with key Pauline texts relating to gender and sexuality (1 Cor. 11, Rom. 7, Eph. 5), texts whose influence on western theology and culture has been enduring and pervasive. They are read here in conjunction with later theological and non-theological texts that reflect that influence - ranging from Augustine and Barth to Virginia Woolf, Freud and Irigaray.

The author, a leading figure in contemporary psychoanalytic theory, deplores the absence of sexuality and the erotic from current psychoanalytic theory and practice. Instead, he demonstrates how human sexuality forms an 'erotic chain'. The work of analysis, he argues, consists in following the dynamic movements of the erotic process, by ascertaining its links with other aspects of the psyche. The author re-visits many previously neglected or ignored areas of psychoanalytic debate, including the complicated relationship between pleasure and reproduction, and the links between psychoanalysis, anthropology, and biology. He also embarks on extensive and radical re-readings of Klein, Winnicott, Lacan, and other major psychoanalytic thinkers.

The philosophy of loveFor centuries, popular writers and respected scholars have written about and analyzed the phenomenon of love without exhausting its potential for contemporary debate. By representing the three major traditions in the philosophy of love--Platonic eros, Christian agape, and Aristotelian philia--editor Alan Soble has not only examined the intellectual problem of what "love" is, but has designed a dialogue among the three traditions in genuine philosophical style. "Eros is acquisitive, egocentric or even selfish; agape is a giving love. Eros is an unconstant, unfaithful love, while agape is unwavering and continues to give despite ingratitude. Eros is a love that responds to the merit or value of its object; while agape creates value in its object as a result of loving it... Finally, eros is an ascending love, the human's route to God; agape is a descending love, GodÆs route to humans... Philia is caught between eros and agape."--From the Introduction to Eros, Agape and Philia ISSUES EXPLORED: --What is the state of love today as seen through the eyes of Plato, Aristotle, and Paul? --How do relations between the sexes illustrate the difficulties of love? --What are the nature and effects of exclusivity, reciprocity, and constancy? --What are the conceptual and psychological ties between sex and love? --Does it make any sense to think of love in moral terms?

Essays on the theme of sexual love.In spite of the fact that marriage is recognized as a sacrament by the Church, the attitude of Christian thought towards the sexual relationship and its spiritualizing potentialities has been in practice singularly limited and negative. In this book the author does not provide a systematic theology of sexual love but indicates some of the considerations and principles that must be taken into account before such a theology can be adequately formulated.

***FINALIST, USA Best Books 2010 Awards – Spirituality & Self-Help: Relationships The quest for lasting love is one of life’s essential pursuits, in some ways the most essential. But it’s also a quest that’s impossible to separate from spiritual and sexual needs. In Eros Ascending, author John Maxwell Taylor offers a wide-ranging study of sexual dysfunction in society and explains how healthy sexuality can be an entryway to universal love and higher consciousness. Based on Taylor’s twenty-three-year experience with Taoist practices, the book presents an engaging analysis of love, relationships, and sexuality from spiritual, romantic, and sexual perspectives. Taylor melds essential ideas by Jung, Gurdjieff, and Taoist Master Mantak Chia with science, biology, spiritual tradition, and current popular culture to shed new light on this eternal yet misunderstood subject. Not just for couples, the book is equally useful for single people who want to understand the methods for “learning to love yourself ” in preparation for a fulfilling, long-term relationship. Taylor draws on his eclectic background as a successful playwright, composer, actor, and musician in this persuasive plan for converting ordinary sexual energy into food for the soul.
