Machine translation (MT) has increasingly become an indispensable tool for decoding the meaning of a text from a source language into a target language in our current information and knowledge era. In particular, MT of proper names (PN) plays a crucial role in providing the specific and precise identification of persons, places, organizations, and artefacts through the languages. Despite a large number of studies and significant achievements of named entity recognition in the NLP community around the world, there has been almost no research on PNMT for Vietnamese language. Due to the different features of PN writing, transliteration or transcription and translation from a variety of languages including English, French, Russian, Chinese, etc. into Vietnamese, the PNMT from those languages into Vietnamese is still challenging and problematic issue. This study focuses on theproblems of English-Vietnamese and French-Vietnamese PNMT arising from current MT engines. First,it proposes a corpus-based PN classification, then a detailed PNMT error analysis to conclude with some pre-processing solutions in order to improve the MT quality. Through the analysis and classification of PNMT errors from the two English-Vietnamese and French-Vietnamese parallel corpora of texts with PNs, we propose solutions concerning two major issues: (1) corpus annotation for preparing the pre-processing databases, and (2) design of the pre-processing program to be used on annotated corpora to reduce the PNMT errors and enhance the quality of MTsystems, including Google, Vietgle, Bing and EVTran. The efficacy of different annotation methods of English and French corpora of PNs and the results of PNMT errors before and after using the pre-processing program on the two annotated corpora are compared and discussed in this study. They prove that the pre-processing solution reduces significantly PNMT errors and contributes to the improvement of the MT systems’ for Vietnamese language.

The present study identified different types and frequency of grammatical errors in Vietnamese EFL learners with a focus on preposition errors. The study also investigated the negative effect of first language (L1) transfer on Vietnamese EFL language acquisition. The researcher used the combination of Contrastive Analysis (CA) and Error Analysis (EA) in this study, first using EA to analyze 50 papers writter by Vietnamese non-English-major students at a university, then using CA to help the researcher pinpoint causes of learners' errors. The analysis was paired with fifteen students to see how they described the influence of their L1, to help determine whether L1 negative transfer appeard to effect preposition errors.

Machine Translation (MT) has become widely used throughout the world as a medium of communication between those who live in different countries and speak different languages. However, translation between distant languages constitutes a challenge for machines. Therefore, translation evaluation is poised to play a significant role in the process of designing and developing effective MT systems. This book evaluates three prominent MT systems, including Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, and Sakhr, each of which provides translation between English and Arabic. In the book Almahasees scrutinizes the capacity of the three systems in dealing with translation between English and Arabic in a large corpus taken from various domains, including the United Nation (UN), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Arab League, Petra News Agency reports, and two literary texts: The Old Man and the Sea and The Prophet. The evaluation covers holistic analysis to assess the output of the three systems in terms of Translation Automation User Society (TAUS) adequacy and fluency scales. The text also looks at error analysis to evaluate the systems’ output in terms of orthography, lexis, grammar, and semantics at the entire-text level and in terms of lexis, grammar, and semantics at the collocation level. The research findings contained within this volume provide important feedback about the capabilities of the three MT systems with respect to EnglishArabic translation and paves the way for further research on such an important topic.
