A lo largo de sus más de dos siglos de presencia en suelo americano, el tribunal del Santo Oficio se ocupó del proceso de una considerable variedad de crímenes cometidos en contra de la fe católica de la época, abarcando sus intereses desde el pensamiento heterodoxo profundamente disidente, hasta las infracciones menores cometidas por los mismos católicos que no actuaban sistemáticamente en contra de la religión. Esta obra, enmarcada en los primeros cincuenta años de la actividad inquisitorial cartagenera, explora una de las manifestaciones más frecuentes de estas faltas menores a lo largo de la época estudiada: los delitos de palabra (blasfemia, reniegos y proposiciones erróneas); infracciones cometidas en ocasiones puntuales y concretas que no implicaban un rechazo permanente al catolicismo, pero que a pesar de no revestir mayor gravedad, llegaron a constituirse como una de las más relevantes ocupaciones de la institución durante el periodo estudiado. A través del estudio interpretativo de las actuaciones de las partes involucradas en el proceso de estos delitos (el tribunal, los procesados y sus acusadores) se establece qué significación tenían estos crímenes dentro de la sociedad de su tiempo, a la vez que se realiza una aproximación al funcionamiento efectivo del tribunal en el proceso de estas causas, revelando que a pesar de la leyenda que inevitablemente la rodea, la Inquisición Española presentó ciertos matices que resulta importante conocer.
