Paul Wilhelm Herzog von Württemberg (1797-1860) war württembergischer Titularherzog und ein bedeutender deutscher Naturforscher und Entdecker, der im frühen 19. Jahrhundert zahlreiche Forschungsreisen nach Nordamerika, Nordafrika und Australien unternahm. Herzog Paul widmete sich vor allem der Erforschung Nord- und Südamerikas, und gilt unter anderem als einer der ersten Entdecker der Mississippiquellen. Im Jahr 1829 entdeckte er die Quellen des Missouri River. (Quelle: Wikipedia CC BY-SA 3.0) Im vorliegenden Band schildert Paul Wilhelm von Württemberg seine erste große Forschungsreise nach Kuba und Nordamerika aus den Jahren 1822 bis 1824. Auf dieser Reise erkundete er die Länder am Mississipi, Ohio und die Indianergebiete des Missouri Rivers und führte ein ausführliches Tagebuch, in dem er die besuchten Gegenden naturwissenschaftlich und ethnologisch sehr umfangreich beschrieb. Ein Zeichner fertigte unzählige Bilder von den Landschaften, den Pflanzen und Tieren, die er in einem separaten Band zu veröffentlichen beabsichtigte. Der reiche Nachlass an Aufzeichnungen und Abbildungen wurde leider unausgewertet zerstört. Paul Wilhelm von Württemberg bezeichnet sein Werk als "historischen Reisebericht" in welchem er sich in "keine strengeren scientifischen Details" eingelassen hat, da der "Zweck der Reise selbst kein anderer war, als der, die Kenntnisse des Landes, seiner Einwohner und Produkte zu erlangen [...]" und der "gebildeten Welt" mitzuteilen. Eine gut strukturierte, detailreiche, sprachlich leicht zugängliche spannende Lektüre erwartet den interessierten Leser. Unveränderter Nachdruck der in Frakturschrift verfaßten Originalausgabe von 1835.
