This brief monograph explores the historical motivations for two sets of phonological changes in some varieties of Romance: restructured voicing of intervocalic /p t k/, and palatalization of initial /l/ and /n/. These developments have been treated repeatedly over the decades, yet neither has enjoyed a satisfactory solution. This book attempts to demonstrate that both outcomes are ultimately attributable to the loss of early pan-Romance consonant gemination. This study is of interest not only to the language-specific field of historical Romance linguistics, but also to general historical linguistics. The central problems examined here constitute classic cases of questions that cannot be answered by confining analysis solely to the individual languages under investigation. The passage of time, the indirect nature of fragmentary and accidental documentation, and the nature of the changes themselves conspire to deny access to the most essential facts. However, comparison of closely cognate languages now undergoing change supplies a perspective for discerning conditions that may ultimately lead to states achieved in the distant past by the languages under investigation.

Since the inducing forms, Xuets and Xuei, contained, not diphthongs, but simple vowels of the quality which appeared elsewhere in the paradigm (pp. 124 ff.), the restored subjunctive forms contained, not 77i, but a monophthong of the same quality as that of the second person plural. Consequently we find very frequently such subjunctives as 8odrj, P. Petr. ii. 2. 1. 10 (260 B.C.). The frequent spelling with 77i in the subjunctive forms of late inscriptions and papyri is due in part to the influence of old documents with 77i in these forms but chiefly to the fact that the corresponding indicative forms were written with the digraph ei. The diphthongs ai and i, and also the restored 77i, lost their second element at various times in different parts of the Greek world. In Attica the loss occurred not far from 200 B.C.1 The change is reflected in the form of Greek loan-words in Latin; Thraex, tragoedus, etc., were borrowed in early times, while Thrax, Thracia, odeum are later forms. One of the main cultural consequences of the contacts between Islam and the West has been the borrowing of hundreds of words, mostly of Arabic but also of other important languages of the Islamic world, such as Persian, Turkish, Berber, etc. by Western languages. Such loanwords are particularly abundant and relevant in the case of the Iberian Peninsula because of the presence of Islamic states in it for many centuries; their study is very revealing when it comes to assess the impact of those states in the emergence and shaping of Western civilization. Some famous Arabic scholars, above all R.
