[English]: Through the correspondence between Michele Amari (1806-1889) and Raffaele Starrabba (1834-1906), the volume provides a glimpse of the historiographical panorama of the Italian nineteenth century in the crucial period that followed the birth of the Nation. The correspondence also illuminates the figure of Baron Starrabba, who played a fundamental role in the local archival administration and was the founder, with Isidoro Carini, of the Sicilian Society for the History and of its periodical, the "Archivio Storico Siciliano". / [Italiano]: Attraverso il carteggio intercorso tra il noto storico Michele Amari (1806-1889) e l'archivista siciliano Raffaele Starrabba (1834-1906), il volume fornisce uno spaccato del panorama storiografico dell’Ottocento italiano nel periodo cruciale che seguì la nascita dello Stato unitario, restituendo al contempo il giusto peso al Barone Starrabba, che ebbe un ruolo fondamentale all'interno dell'amministrazione archivistica locale e fu il fondatore, con Isidoro Carini, della Società Siciliana per la Storia Patria e del suo periodico, l’«Archivio Storico Siciliano».

[English]: This volume investigates how historiography became a “profession” from the 13th to the 15th century. As a genre, historiography is difficult to define: inspired by Cicero’s rhetorical rules, humanists were the first to elaborate a specific ars. In doing so, they adapted rhetoric to a new ethical sense of humanitas. Several contributors to this book have already discussed in previous works of theirs the linguistic and rhetorical choices that some important historians made. See, for instance, Tra storiografia e retorica: prospettive nel basso medioevo italiano, ed. M. Zabbia, in «Reti Medievali. Rivista», 19 (2018), especially the papers by Paolo Garbini, Marino Zabbia, and Fulvio Delle Donne. On this occasion, they pay attention to the authors’ direct interventions: their self-representation and reflections on methodological issues reveal a new consciousness, which gradually developed over the centuries. This volume is a part of the PRIN project (the acronym standing for Project of Relevant National Interest) titled “A.L.I.M. (Digital Archive of the Italian Latinity in the Middle Ages: http://www.alim.dfll.univr.it): Practices and theory for computer archiving and philology applied to medieval texts”, which Professor Fulvio Delle Donne coordinates at the University of Basilicata. [Italiano]: Il volume indaga l’evoluzione della “professionalizzazione” della figura dello storiografo, dal XIII al XV secolo. Incerta, infatti, è la definizione del “genere” storiografico fino all’età umanistica, quando viene elaborata una specifica ars, che, facendo ricorso soprattutto alle regole retoriche ciceroniane, adatta la tecnica oratoria al rinnovato senso etico della humanitas. Dopo aver riflettuto, in una precedente miscellanea (Tra storiografia e retorica: prospettive nel basso medioevo italiano, a cura di M. Zabbia, in «Reti Medievali. Rivista», 19 (2018), con articoli di Paolo Garbini, Marino Zabbia, Fulvio Delle Donne) sulle scelte linguistiche e retoriche riscontrabili nelle opere degli storiografi più avvertiti, in questa occasione si presta attenzione agli interventi diretti dell’autore: la sua autorappresentazione, ovvero le sue riflessioni sul metodo usato rivelano, nel corso dei secoli, una presa di coscienza sempre più acuta delle peculiarità della scrittura storica. [Italiano]: “Ragione” e “razionalita” sono oggi nozioni problematiche: considerate a lungo, nella storia del pensiero occidentale, come tratti distintivi dell’uomo e della civiltà euro-americana, da un certo punto in poi sono state messe in discussione e lacerate dalla crisi e dal malessere di quest’ultima. Alla luce delle controversie più recenti e delle riflessioni sul tema sviluppate nella prima metà del Novecento, questo libro si propone di riaprire la querelle sulla ratio con l’intento di mettere in luce – attraverso una serie di “casi di studio” – la grana sottile dei molteplici significati e usi della nozione di ragione, ma anche di interrogarsi sulle differenti “epoche” della ragione provando a ricostruirne la “storia”. I saggi contenuti in questo volume, dunque, contestualizzano e analizzano le accezioni e le ambiguità del termine ratio e dei suoi derivati nel quadro delle molteplici discussioni che ne hanno ritmato la storia a partire dalla prima modernità, quando il concetto assunse nuove configurazioni rispetto agli usi attestati nel pensiero antico e medioevale, sino al dibattito contemporaneo ./[English]: “Reason” and “rationality” are, today, problematic notions: considered for a long time, in the history of Western thought, as distinctive traits of man and of the Euro-American civilization, from a certain point onwards they have been called into question and ripped apart by the crisis and the malaise of the latter. In the light of the most recent controversies and reflections on the subject developed over the first half of the 20th century, this book aims to riegnite the debate on “ratio” with the intention of highlighting – through a series of “case studies” – the fine texture of the multiple meanings and uses of the notion of reason, but also to question the different “eras” of reason by attempting to reconstruct its “history”. The essays included in this volume, therefore, contextualise and analyse the meanings and ambiguities of the term “ratio” and its derivatives within the framework of the many discussions that have marked its history from the earliest modernity, when the concept assumed new configurations with respect to the uses attested in Ancient and Medieval thought, to the contemporary debate.

Producing this change was a non-secondary aim of a philosophy that, in the spirit of modern reflexivity, had the pride of calling itself "critical", firm in the intention of reconciling the different needs of reason.
