Das Buch stellt zwei pädagogische Konzepte vor, die in der politischen Wendezeit vom Deutschen Kaiserreich zur Weimarer Demokratie zu verorten sind. Zentral ist die Frage nach den sozialen Bedingungen und Aufgaben von Erziehung gerade im Hinblick auf eine der wichtigsten Herausforderungen der Zeit, nämlich den Aufbau einer demokratischen Gesellschaft. Dabei erweisen sich die pädagogischen Antworten von Kurt Hahn und Paul Natorp in entscheidenden Punkten geradezu als komplementär. Natorp fokussiert Erziehung und Bildung „von unten“. Im Konzept des Sozialidealismus geht es ihm darum, gerade die bildungsfernen Kreise zu erreichen und mit einzubeziehen. Dagegen setzt Hahns Internatsschulerziehung primär auf die Bildung einer gesellschaftlichen bzw. politischen Elite und auf verantwortungsvolle Führerschaft. Doch trotz unterschiedlicher Ansatzpunkte finden sich auch Parallelen und Gemeinsamkeiten im Denken und Schaffen beider Pädagogen. Dazu gehört, dass beide der Erziehung und Bildung eine elementare Funktion im Hinblick auf die zu bildende Gemeinschafts- und Gesellschaftsordnung einräumen. In diesem Punkt geben sich beide Klassiker der Erziehungswissenschaft als Sozialpädagogen im ursprünglichen Sinn des Wortes zu erkennen.

Zu Unrecht – wie diese Studie eindrucksvoll zeigt, indem sie in vergleichs- und transfergeschichtlicher Perspektive deutsche und britische Jugendfreiwilligendienste analysiert. Da freiwillige Sozialarbeit gewöhnlich gesellschaftliche Ungleichheiten mildern soll, spiegeln die Debatten, die über die Jugenddienste geführt wurden, kontroverse Vorstellungen über den Zusammenhalt der Gesellschaft und über das Verhältnis des Einzelnen zur Allgemeinheit. Die Studie zeichnet nuanciert nach, wie diese Dienste im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts entstanden, sich entwickelten und schließlich zu einem Massenphänomen wurden. Die Einführung des deutschen Freiwilligen Sozialen Jahres motivierte sich maßgeblich aus konservativen Ängsten vor einer wachsenden Frauenerwerbstätigkeit: Die Teilnehmerinnen sollten Haushalts- und Pflegetätigkeiten erlernen und auf das Leben als Ehefrau und Mutter eingestimmt werden. Die britischen Dienste hingegen, die aus der Sorge heraus entstanden, die männliche Jugend werde im Wohlstand verweichlichen, waren geprägt durch heroische Abenteuerideale. Um 1968 wurden die Dienste dann zu einer Musterinstitution demokratischer Gesellschaftsveränderung umdefiniert. Nun übte vor allem die Aktion Sühnezeichen mit ihrer vergangenheitspolitischen Ausrichtung eine große Attraktivität aus.
