Die Geschichte der Baptistengemeinde in Schöningen lässt sich bis 1850 zurückverfolgen. Damals galt allein das Staatskirchentum als erlaubt. Eine Freikirche im Herzogtum Braunschweig erschien als Ungeheuerlichkeit. Deshalb sollten diese "Wiedertäufer" bestraft werden. Sie gehörten ins Gefängnis Ihren Kindern drohten Zwangstaufen. Trotzdem etablierte sich die Baptistengemeinde. Ihre Entwicklung führte über viele interessante Stationen. Sie wurde zu einem unübersehbaren Teil der Kirchengeschichte Schöningens und des Landkreises Helmstedt bis in die Gegenwart. Dabei zeigt sich die Gemeinde als eine moderne Kirchenvariante. Sie ist geprägt vom gelebten Glauben, freiwilliger Mitgliedschaft, motivierender Mitgestaltung durch ihre Mitglieder und einer Finanzierung ohne Kirchensteuern. Der Baptismus ist nicht nur weltweit, sondern auch in Schöningen eine selbstbewusste Stimme im ökumenischen Miteinander der Kirchen. Der Autor zeichnet nicht nur die Chronologie der örtlichen Gemeinde nach. Ihm geht es um den Blick für die Zusammenhänge, in denen eine solche Geschichte überhaupt nur verständlich sein kann. So bezieht er gesellschaftspolitische, wirtschaftliche und natürlich kirchenpolitische Entwicklungen mit ein. Er geht mit wissenschaftlicher Gründlichkeit vor, nimmt dem Leser dadurch aber nicht die Lesefreude. Schließlich hat eine Gemeinde immer auch ihr menschliches und manchmal auch ihr allzu menschliches Gepräge. Sein Buch bietet eine informative und unterhaltsame Lektüre. Es ist eine Einladung, einen interessanten Aspekt Schöningens aus einem ungewohnten Blickwinkel kennenzulernen.
