El presente libro aspira a ser una aproximación de conjunto –ni oclusiva ni conclusiva– a la historia sociocultural de las y los jóvenes en América Latina en el siglo XX, intentando comprender a la(s) juventud(es) como fenómeno, proceso y experiencia histórica, y retratando la pluralidad de formas a través de las cuales las y los jóvenes se presentan en público y son representados por las instituciones, los intelectuales, la industria cultural y los medios de comunicación. De este modo, se buscan raíces, se identifican territorios, se exponen lenguajes, valores y concepciones, tomando en consideración distintos países y periodos del siglo pasado. Desde múltiples andamiajes teórico-metodológicos, que van desde los estudios culturales y la antropología posnacional, hasta la historia oral, la obra emprende –en su primera parte–, esfuerzos de síntesis teórica e histórica que tienen como objetivo ofrecer una visión sumaria de la construcción histórica, transcultural y conceptual de la juventud en América Latina. En la segunda parte, se abordan casos nacionales de cariz temporal amplio –varias décadas, especialmente del siglo XX– y se ofrecen estudios comprehensivos de México, Brasil, Argentina y Chile. En su último apartado, se sitúan investigaciones sobre procesos, espacios geoculturales y temporales específicos, los que se desarrollan en una serie de monografías sobre trayectorias juveniles en la Frontera México-Estados Unidos, Nicaragua y Colombia.
