Previous scholarship on recent Muslim Qurʾanic exegesis has mostly focussed on modernising trends, usually remaining within the confines of a single language area. Transcending this hitherto dominating narrow focus, this book offers a comparative analysis of a body of contemporary Sunnite Qurʾanic commentaries from the Arab World, Indonesia and Turkey. It takes into account both the influence of specific local conditions and the common intellectual heritage they rely on. By paying special attention not only to new developments, but also to the embeddedness of contemporary Qurʾanic exegesis into a more than thousand-year-old intellectual tradition, it provides new insights into the religious, academic, political and social context of exegetical practice in the modern Islamic World. Die Forschung zur neueren muslimischen Koranexegese hat sich bislang weitgehend auf modernisierende Trends konzentriert und sich dabei zumeist innerhalb der Grenzen eines Sprachraums bewegt. Salafism and jihadism are an important focus of inner-German security discussions. The Salafi proselytizing is more successful than ever, and the jihad in Afghanistan or Syria pulls Islamists from Germany.This collection offers an examination of currently virulent phenomena of Salafism and jihadism from different perspectives. It is sometimes claimed that either Islam and violence or religion and terror go hand in hand; the authors of this volume aim to show that this is not so. Using the methods of social science to determine whether and under what conditions such a dangerous proximity comes about, this book offers insight into which actors are being looked for by extremists to exploit and to use as self-fulfilling prophecies.To this end, the authors develop innovative analytical concepts: Among other things, a process of co-radicalization and an attitude-based approach to the study of Salafist networks are described.The book makes an important contribution to the current debate by not presenting the potentially dangerous proximity of Islam and violence as a social fact, but describes it as a factor that can be influenced and understood.Salafismus und Dschihadismus stehen im Mittelpunkt innerdeutscher Sicherheitsdiskussionen. This volume brings together a rich and varied collection of essays by Gilles Quispel (1916-2006), Professor of the History of the Early Church at Utrecht University from 1951 until his retirement in 1983. During his illustrious career, Professor Quispel was also visiting Professor at Harvard University in 1964/65, and visiting Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven from 1969 until 1974. The fifty essays collected in this volume testify to most of the prominent themes from Professor Quispel’s scholarly career: the writings of the Nag Hammadi library in general and the Gospel of Thomas in particular; Tatian’s Diatessaron and its influences; the Hermetica; Mani and Manichaeism; the Jewish origins of Gnosticism; and Gnosis and the future of Christianity. This volume also makes a number of his less known earlier publications (mainly presented under the heading ‘Catholica’) available to the international community. Until shortly before he died, Professor Quispel remained active in his study of the Gospel of Thomas. He had been one of the first to acquire the Coptic text of the Gospel of Thomas, of which he published the first translation in 1959 and his final translation in 2005. He was also active in researching the Diatessaron, and Valentinus ‘the Gnostic’. One of his most recent essays – published for the first time in this volume – is on ‘the Muslim Jesus.’
