Sejauh ingatan saya, kesukaan pada puisi dimulai saat SMA. Sebagaimana teman-teman lainnya, saya kagum akan bunyi dan isi puisi-puisi Chairil Anwar yang diajarkan di sekolah. Saat dibacakan terasa sangat musical dan sekaligus membangun angan tentang sesuatu yang muncul dari baris-baris puisi itu. Klise? Memang. Tapi entah bagaimana, itulah yang saya ingat tentang puisi-puisi pertama yang saya sukai. Membaca puisi Chairil seperti menikmati musik klasik. Saat menikmati musik klasik, saya membayangkan padang rumput di pedesaan Vienna seperti dalam film ñSound of Musicî, atau membayangkan suasana jalan-jalan di kota-kota di Eropa.
