Toussaint Louverture written by Madison Smartt Bell and has been published by Vintage this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-06-10 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

At the end of the 1700s, French Saint Domingue was the richest and most brutal colony in the Western Hemisphere. A mere twelve years later, however, Haitian rebels had defeated the Spanish, British, and French and declared independence after the first—and only—successful slave revolt in history. Much of the success of the revolution must be credited to one man, Toussaint Louverture, a figure about whom surprisingly little is known. In this fascinating biography, Madison Smartt Bell, award-winning author of a trilogy of novels that investigate Haiti’s history, combines a novelist’s passion with a deep knowledge of the historical milieu that produced the man labeled a saint, a martyr, or a clever opportunist who instigated one of the most violent events in modern history. The first biography in English in over sixty years of the man who led the Haitian Revolution, this is an engaging reexamination of the controversial, paradoxical leader.

Including work by leading scholars, artists, scientists and practitioners in the field of visual culture, The Routledge Companion to Photography, Representation and Social Justice is a seminal reference source for the new roles and contexts of photography in the twenty-first century. Bringing together a diverse set of contributions from across the globe, the volume explores current debates surrounding post-colonial thinking, empowerment, identity, contemporary modes of self-representation, diversity in the arts, the automated creation and use of imagery in science and industry, vernacular imagery and social media platforms and visual mechanisms for control and manipulation in the age of surveillance capitalism and deep fakes, as well as the role of imagery in times of crisis, such as pandemics, wars and climate change. The analysis of these complex themes will be anchored in existing theoretical frameworks but also include new ways of thinking about social justice and representation and how to cope with our daily image tsunami. Individual chapters bring together a diverse set of contributions, featuring essays, interviews, conversations and case studies by artists, scientists, curators, scholars, medical doctors, astrophysicists and social activists, who all share a strong interest in how lens-based media have shaped our world in recent years. Expanding on contemporary debates within the field, the Companion is essential reading for photographers, scholars and students alike.

Cicatrices written by Jeffrey Browitt and has been published by Liverpool University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-01 with Literary Collections categories.

Cicatrices offers an understanding of the current mood in Central American fiction as writers attempt to come to terms with a collapsing social, political and economic landscape dominated by forced migration, drug trafficking, corruption and the struggle to establish fully democratic societies. Writers adopt various narrative strategies to account for this in fictional form, most typically the crime novel cum critical realism and the political thriller, but also a kind of impressionist realism as well as auto-fiction and fictional testimony. Thematic unity is provided by displacement in all its guises and the inability to leave behind a problematic past that bleeds into the present scars that wont heal. This fiction speaks of existential crisis in a context of social precarity and lack of opportunity, a legacy of civil war and neoliberal adjustment, as Central Americans seek fulfillment through migration and nomadism. Whether external or internal, self-imposed or forced, migration brings in train mal-adaptation to new worlds and a poetics of loss and solitude. An atmosphere of survival, exhaustion, dissipation and decay (in both a physical and a moral sense) dominates, but also rays of hope a sober reckoning the morning after. Cicatrices is a mix of young and older, male and female, authors of novels and short stories, spread across five Central American countries: Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Honduras. Cicatrices is an essential collection for any reader wishing to get a sense of the direction and quality of current Central American fiction as it engages with the problems of the region.
