Escape to the Straits is a novel based on a true story about Daniel Milan's life in Cuba during the late 1990's. The story takes on several twists and begins after the sudden death of Daniel's father uproots Daniel and his mother to the town of Ranchuelo in central Cuba. He lands a position as a dock worker in a cigarette factory, and not only detests the drudgery of his job but despises the abuse by the supervisor and the cruel factory guards. Daniel supplements his meager wages by joining a gang of co-worker thieves to steal and sell cigarettes on the black market. During a well-planned attempted robbery, the factory guards are alerted, and Daniel is injured and trapped at the base of a twenty foot stack of tobacco boxes. During his recovery and at an impromptu party at his home, he encounters Juliana, his best friend Rafael's sister. This infatuation of several years, once discouraged by Rafael, begins to blossom. Daniel is overcome by profound love and Juliana becomes a beacon amidst the bleakness of life under Fidel Castro's regime. Despite battling with inner confusion about his own destiny, adjusting to chaos and change at the factory, and wrestling to survive in the economic turmoil of communist Cuba, Daniel orchestrates a romantic proposal to Juliana at a waterfall in the Sierra del Escambray Mountains, after which, the couple narrowly escapes death. The proposal culminates in a community celebration and the first wedding in Santa Rosa de Lima in seventeen years. Happiness turns to shock after the nuptials when Daniel spots the factory sergeant mingling with Special Forces in front of the church. Daniel's world spirals after he discovers that Maximo Lopez is smitten by Juliana and has secretly plotted against him. Daniel is stunned by Max's retaliation, and an act of arson that destroys the Lopez family's automotive business. The story becomes an entangled web of fear, deception, desperation, and tension compounded by Daniel's phobia of the sea. He is thrown in prison, fights for his life, and is forced to make a life altering decision. To avoid military pursuit and further imprisonment, he relocates to Havana where he hustles to survive and executes a clandestine departure from Cuba but his meticulously planned voyage is foiled by a factor beyond his control. Conflict abounds in this story as the main character struggles to survive and to flee an oppressed, communist society. Although Cuban by birth, Daniel is a universal figure who suffers and succeeds in solving trying situations. He faces each disappointment with determination, a sense of humor and ultimately never gives up.

While it is the duty of an army to maintain enemy soldiers in prisoner-of-war (POW) camps, it is also the right of every POW soldier, irrespective of rank and nationality, to escape and to engage the enemy in whatever method possible. And when the stakes are as big as the Second World War, the stage is set for any challenge that a soldier may have to face& and overcome. This is a little known story of three young officers of the Indian Army, who escaped from a Japanese POW camp in Singapore and made their way through Malaya (now Malaysia), Thailand and Burma (now Myanmar) to reach India, over a period of six months. Travelling through a gruelling tract of arid forests, with a forever depleted stock of provisions and always in the constant fear of coming face to face with enemy forces, these young officers displayed raw courage and bravery in the face of complete annihilation.

In May 1940, a group of Auckland yachtsmen who were members of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve left for the war. Leonard Hill, a young Māori sailor, and his friends arrived in Singapore under siege. Playing to their strengths as small boat sailors, they manned fast motor launches, raiding and rescuing Allies from behind enemy lines. On the night of 13 February 1942, the eve of the fall of Singapore, they took two Fairmiles, ML310 and ML311, to evacuate members of the Allied High Command and survivors of sinking vessels. Hunted down by the Japanese, most of the almost one hundred men perished. Some became POWs, and of those who attempted to escape, only three succeeded: Leonard Hill, Herbert 'Johnny' Bull and Andrew Brough. This is the story of how they evaded the Japanese and survived.

The Fall of Singapore was the largest military blow to the British war effort in the Second World War, underequipped, without adequate air-cover; the embattled defenders made a valiant stand against the invading Japanese army to no avail. In this eyewitness account, illustrated with photographs, the anonymous author captures the attempts of the Empire troops to stem the tide of defeat as the inadequate defences were overrun. The anonymous author was a member of the Volunteer Defence Force and saw up close the carnage and heroics of the defenders firsthand before escaping in the nick of time via Penang.

While the Naval base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba is well-known for its infamous prison camp, few people are aware of its prior use as an immigrant detention center for Haitian and Cuban refugees. Beginning in August 1994, the United States government declared that thousands of Cubans who had launched themselves into the Florida Straits on rickety rafts were "illegal refugees" and sent them to join over fifteen thousand Haitians already being held on Guantánamo after fleeing a violent coup in Haiti. Escape to Miami recounts the gripping stories of the rafters who were detained in Guantánamo during the 1994-1996 Cuban Rafter Crisis. After working in the camps for a year as an employee of the U.S. Justice Department, Elizabeth Campisi conducted life history interviews with twelve of the rafters, chronicling their departures from Cuba, their rafting trips, life on the base, and their initial experiences in Cuban Miami. Through these remarkable narratives, the book details the ways in which the rafters used creative expression, such as performance and artwork, to cope with the traumas they experienced in the camp. Campisi explores these coping mechanisms, showing that, when people work through individually-traumatic experiences as a group, the new meanings they create during that process can come together to change existing cultures or create new ones. Vivid and engaging, Escape to Miami gives voice to the untold stories of Guantánamo. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in policy, Latin American history, and human rights.

In his lifetime, Isaacs rarely referred to his dramatic escape from a POW camp in Villingen, Germany. The only record of the incident is a brief and incomplete report he wrote in 1919 at the direction of the secretary of the navy.

Sydney De Loghe was the pen name used by Australian Sydney Loch when he published this fictionalised autobiography. He had served in the First A.I.F. in the Gallipoli Campaign and the original manuscript was written as an account of this service but by the time it was completed Loch had returned wounded and sick to Australia and was still in active service. With wartime censorship in effect in Australia, his publisher Henry Champion advised that it should be edited and published as a novel, with names changed to disguise the true identity of the characters, in order to pass the censor. This was done and the first edition of 2,000 copies which appeared in 1916 was well received and quickly sold out. A second edition was published shortly after, but this time bore the inscription 'This Book, Written in Australia, Egypt and Gallipoli, is true'. This did not escape the censor's notice and on finding the book was in fact a true account, not a work of fiction, the book was banned and all copies of the second edition pulped. In 1917 other editions appeared outside Australia, and it is reprinted here from the John Murray English edition. The book is notable for its graphic portrayal of conditions in Gallipoli and their effects on the servicemen involved in the campaign.

Weakened by hunger, thirst and ill-treatment, author Charles McCormac, then a World War Two prisoner-of-war in Japanese-occupied Singapore, knew that if he did not escape he would die. With sixteen others he broke out of Pasir Panjang camp and began an epic two-thousand-mile escape from the island of Singapore, through the jungles of Indonesia to Australia. With no compass and no map, and only the goodwill of villagers and their own wits to rely on, the British and Australian POWs? escape took a staggering five months and only two out of the original seventeen men survived. You'll Die in Singapore is Charles McCormac's compelling true account of one of the most horrifying and amazing escapes in World War Two. It is a story of courage, endurance and compassion, and is a gripping read.

'Stories that start like delicate webs and finish like unbreakable wire traps' Neil Gaiman Naomi Ishiguro's fresh, magical and delightfully speculative short story collection merges the inventiveness of David Mitchell and the fairy-tale allure of Angela Carter to form its own powerful magic. Witness what happens when a space-obsessed child conjures up a vortex in his mother's airing cupboard in Shearing Season. Watch unexpected possibilities open up in The Flat Roof when a musician makes friends with a flock of birds. Get lost in the world of The Rat Catcher where, finding himself potentially out of his depth when he is summoned to a decaying royal palace, a rat catcher is plunged into a battle for the throne of a ruined kingdom. In this stunning debut collection, the characters yearn for freedom and flight, and find their worlds transformed beyond their wildest imaginings. 'Naomi Ishiguro's crystal clear prose delights and intrigues' Sharlene Teo 'Winsomely written and engagingly quirky, these are inventive tales that favour imagination over gritty realism.' The Sunday Times 'Ishiguro's imagination is a place where the fantastical lurks in the margins as a possibility, a flavour rather than a genre' The Herald
