To be trapped in poverty is to be trapped in something that you never chose to be in, so it's understandable why so many people are desperate to escape. In this step-by-step guide to escaping poverty, Calvin Morris explains why the four categories may be the only way out. The difference between those who escape and those who don't, may have little to do with how smart they are and more to do with how well they understand the four categories. In this well thought out book, the path to freedom reveals itself to those who truly want to escape. As Morris combines his own experience with the experience of over a hundred other highly successful people -- people who were interviewed for this book, he gives the world a truly workable strategy for escaping poverty. The prison that seems inescapable can be escaped by first learning the principles in this book, then by using those principles to free yourself from the devices that are holding you back. In his own thought-provoking way, Morris introduces the world to what he considers to be the fastest way to break free. His informative and engaging text provides what he argues is a clear advantage to those who want to escape poverty. Some of the topics include: Believing in Yourself Getting the Job You Need Handling Money Making Good Decisions Good and Bad Relationships Taking Advice From Others Staying the Course Avoiding Mistakes Escaping Poverty: The Four Categories is a powerful, life changing book that should be passed on for generations to come. This book is a must read for you if you haven't quite figured out how to distance yourself from poverty. If you have friends, kids, relatives, or co-workers who feel trapped in poverty, then giving them this book might be the deed that breaks them free.

Basing their discussions on the concept of "intergenerational transmission of poverty"--the "process by which poor parents pass on poverty and disadvantage to their children," in the words of editor Moran (until recently a senior economist with the International Development Bank's Sustainable Development Department)--five essays reflect on political, philosophical, social, and other dimensions of investing in early childhood in Latin America. The essays include Amartya Sen's discussion of early childhood investment within the context of the overall development process, as well explorations of the relationship between health, nutrition, and cognitive and social dimensions of poverty; the impact of early childhood investment on economic growth and equity; and the role of the state in marshalling resources for early childhood investment. One of the biggest debates in economic history deals with the Great Divergence. How can we explain that at a certain moment in time (the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries) a certain part of the world (the West) escaped from general poverty and became much richer than it had ever been before and than the rest of the world? Many prominent scholars discussed this question and came up with many different answers. This book provides a systematic analysis of the most important of those answers by means of an analysis of possible explanations in terms of natural resources, labour, capital, the division of labour and market exchange, accumulation and innovation, and as potential underlying determining factors institutions and culture. The author juxtaposes the views of economists / social scientists and of global historians and systematically compares Great Britain and China to illustrate his position. He qualifies the importance of natural resources, accumulation and the extension of markets, points at the importance of factor prices and changes in consumption and emphasizes the role of innovation, institutions - in particular an active developmental state - and culture.

Readable, thought-provoking, and beneficial for those who want to comprehend the plight of the rural poor, Hunger and Hope examines the world of those living near, on, and over the edge of poverty in developing countries. Their aspirations, struggles, and daily challenges are revealed with compassion and genuine understanding of the risks they face to sustain themselves and their families. The text is rich with lucid and methodical observations of the economic processes that shape agricultural development in impoverished countries. The author builds in an imaginative way on his extensive experience assisting farmers and assessing the impacts of agricultural interventions. Real-world illustrations of the policies and practices that not only create opportunities and food security but also create hardships show that, while progress has been made in reducing poverty and hunger, there is a need to do more.

Despite living in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, more than 45 million people in America fall below the poverty line. Struggling to make ends meet, these individuals are familiar faces. You see them on the street, in the news, on TV, outside your house, on your way to work... They are your neighbors, coworkers, friends, acquaintances and possibly even family. You may have even experienced a similar situation yourself. This book is for you. Escaping Poverty is a collection of stories from those who have felt what it is like to be one of the 'have-nots' and are still trying to make it in America. They have not given up on their dreams. Nor should you. Some share how they were able to rise from abject poverty to become self-made millionaires. Others relate their daily struggles as they try to blend in with the "middle class" hiding the 'secret' of their financial hardship. Still others escaped life on the streets from drug-addiction. Each person has a unique story to tell about their journey. Escaping Poverty is a truly worthwhile read about a subject to which many can relate.

Despite decades of macroeconomic reforms, poverty reduction plans and rural growth strategies, poverty is persistent and environmental degradation is accelerating in the developing world. Though traditional economic indicators have improved in some countries, little has worked to open enduring economic and ecological opportunities to the rural poor. This unacceptable outcome grows, in large part, from the failure to place the needs of the poor at the centre of national development strategies and to link local level changes to urgently needed changes in national development policies. This book is designed to change all of that by showing how change must begin at the local level and, from there, push upwards to change policies and institutions at higher levels to remove political, economic and institutional impediments that stifle opportunities for the rural poor and improved environmental management. This approach challenges the notion that poverty reduction and improved natural resource management can originate with design masters in international organizations or national capitals.Working with teams in China, Indonesia, El Salvador, South Africa and Zambia, WWF devised the revolutionary '3xM' - micro (local), meso (sub-national) and macro (national) - Approach to analysing and intervening to change the poverty dimensions in a country. This approach helps improve the local environment and community livelihoods, and promotes policy and institutional changes at state/provincial and national levels that are essential for the sustainable, equitable development. This book provides both the tools and successful case studies to show practitioners how to adopt the 3xM Approach in diverse developing country contexts. Published with WWF
