Algo tan sencillo como amar o desear ha sido y es delito en según qué lugares del mundo si se trata de dos personas del mismo sexo. Hubo una época, no hace tanto, en que el amor sáfico estaba prohibido incluso en la gran pantalla. La censura era acérrima, pero fueron muchos los guionistas que supieron engañarla; su legado son filmes capaces de narrar subtextos lésbicos en el cine más comercial desde principios a finales del siglo xx. En la gran pantalla, como en la vida real, ser mujer y además homosexual obligaba a la más absoluta discreción, tanto que incluso parecían no existir. Cualquier sospecha de lesbianismo supondría el castigo y rechazo social; pero lejos de ser invisibles, el séptimo arte supo retratarlas de manera latente. Basado en su labor investigadora, la autora decidió realizar este trabajo sobre las representaciones sáficas latentes en el cine occidental del siglo xx para dar visibilidad a las mujeres de la comunidad LGTBI, esas que siempre existieron, pero a las que no dejaban ser. Love and Despair explores the multiple and mostly unknown ways progressive and conservative Catholic actors, such as priests, lay activists, journalists, intellectuals, and filmmakers, responded to the significant social and cultural shifts that formed competing notions of modernity in Cold War Mexico. Jaime M. Pensado demonstrates how the Catholic Church as a heterogeneous institution—with key transnational networks in Latin America and Western Europe—was invested in youth activism, state repression, and the counterculture from the postwar period to the more radical Sixties. Similar to their secular counterparts, progressive Catholics often saw themselves as revolutionary actors and nearly always framed their activism as an act of love. When their movements were repressed and their ideas were co-opted, marginalized, and commercialized at the end of the Sixties, the liberating hope of love often turned into a sense of despair.

Pero antes de entrar en materia, le dedica un capítulo a la recepción crítica cubana en torno a lo autobiográfico; otro a los presupuestos de la autobiografía, las memorias, el «testimonio» y la heterobiografía; y uno a la génesis y la evolución de la tradición autobiográfica cubana, que ni escasea ni es corta ni tampoco perezosa. Como colofón, los lectores podrán acceder a un registro bibliográfico de las escrituras y narrativas de vida producidas por afrodescendientes cubanos, que es (mucho) más de lo que se imagina y conoce.

In recent decades in Spain and Latin America, transnational voices, typically stereotyped, alienated or co-opted in the Western world, have been gaining increasing presence in cultural texts. The transnational representation of the “Oriental” subject, namely Arabs and Jews, Chinese and other ethnic groups that have migrated to Spain and Latin America either voluntarily or forcefully, is now being seen anew in both literature and cinema. This book explores Orientalism beyond literature, in which it has already garnered attention, to examine the new ways of seeing and interpreting both the Middle East and the East in contemporary films, in which many of the immigrants traditionally omitted from the dominant narratives are able to present the trauma, memories and violence of their exile and migration. As such, this volume explores the representation of those single and doubly marginalized groups in contemporary Spanish and Latin American cinema, analysing how films from Spain, Mexico, Chile, Brazil and Argentina portray transnational subjects from a wide spectrum of the “Orient” world, including Maghrebs from North Africa, and Palestinian, Jewish, Chinese, and Korean peoples. Once vulnerable to the dominant culture of their adopted homes, facing ostracism and marginalisation, these groups are now entering into the popular imagination and revised history of their new countries. This volume explores the following questions as starting points for its analysis: Are these manifestations the new orientalist normative, or are there other characterizations? Are new cinematic scopes and understandings being created? The old stereotypical orientalist ways of seeing these vulnerable groups are beginning to change to a more authentic representation, although, in some cases, they may still reside in the subtext of films.
