Vitor Hugo Monteiro Franco cruzou minha vida há muito tempo. Ele foi meu aluno no 6o ano do ensino fundamental, no Colégio Santo Antônio, em Duque de Caxias. De alguma forma, as ordens religiosas já nos aproximavam naqueles tempos. Depois disso, eu saí da escola, trilhamos caminhos distantes. Alegrei-me ao reencontra-lo, quando ele era aluno de História da UFF. Após algumas conversas, convidei-o para ser meu bolsista de Iniciação Científica e retomamos um contato que espero ser para sempre. Daquele projeto, nasceu seu trabalho de conclusão de curso e sua dissertação de mestrado. Contudo, Vitor Hugo tornou-se muito maior do que aquele aluno tímido que conheci. Vitor Hugo é um dos mais promissores estudantes de pós-graduação do Rio de Janeiro, cuja longa carreira podemos começar a testemunhar pela obra aqui apresentada. Os africanos e afro-brasileiros escravizados no Brasil sofreram violência e exploração, independentemente de quem eram seus senhores. Mesmo empregados em uma Fazenda de uma Ordem religiosa, as pessoas escravizadas tinham suas condições de vida limitadas pela vontade senhorial e pela lógica de uma sociedade que dependia do trabalho escravo para existir e funcionar. Nesta obra, ao analisar as famílias de escravizados da Ordem de São Bento distribuídos na Fazenda de Iguassú, no entorno da Guanabara, o autor identificou laços de afetividade e proteção que favoreceram a sobrevivência no cativeiro. Para isso, foram interpretados diferentes registros históricos que apontaram o casamento, o compadrio e a participação na Irmandade de Nossa Senhora do Rosário como formas de agenciamento dos africanos no contexto em que experimentaram viver a escravidão. Com base em registros paroquiais, inventários, testamentos, jornais e utilizando uma metodologia que conjuga a demografia histórica com a micro-história, o autor apresenta uma pesquisa capaz de problematizar as relações que as ordens religiosas não tinham apenas com a escravidão, mas com os escravizados. Essa questão é fundamental, pois esse exercício metodológico possibilita conhecer as identidades, os interesses, e os projetos de homens e mulheres que, mesmo desterrados do continente africano e submetidos ao trabalho escravo, recompuseram parte de suas vidas, ressignificaram suas existências e estabeleceram laços familiares e comunitários que os humanizaram, mesmo em uma sociedade que lhes viam apenas como mão de obra escrava.
