A Posthumous History of José Martí: The Apostle and His Afterlife focuses on Martí’s posthumous legacy and his lasting influence on succeeding generations of Cubans on the island and abroad. Over 120 years after his death on a Cuban battlefield in 1895, Martí studies have long been the contested property of opposing sides in an ongoing ideological battle. Both the Cuban nation-state, which claims Martí as a crucial inspiration for its Marxist revolutionary government, and diasporic communities in the US who honor Martí as a figure of hope for the Cuban nation-in-exile, insist on the centrality of his words and image for their respective visions of Cuban nationhood. The book also explores more recent scholarship that has reassessed Martí’s literary, cultural, and ideological value, allowing us to read him beyond the Havana-Miami axis toward engagement with a broader historical and geographical tableau. Martí has thus begun to outgrow his mutually-reinforcing cults in Cuba and the diaspora, to assume his true significance as a hemispheric and global writer and thinker.

This penetrating study of political leadership and state formation centers on the Cuban leader Jose Marti (1853-1895) and his relationship with Key West, Florida, the major Cuban emigre colony of the time. The first book to explore specifically Marti's leadership qualities and style of leadership, it will be of significant interest to political scientists and students interested in the ways in which potential leaders react to the circumstances encountered and challenges faced in their quest for leadership. Ronning explains how Marti actively sought leadership of the Cuban struggle for independence, effectively applying his personal qualities to meet the needs and desires of his community of emigres in Key West. But, Ronning shows, Marti never lost sight of what he perceived as higher humanitarian and humanistic goals for a truly just republic, believing that the process of state formation must coincide with the struggle for independence itself. Ronning begins with both a synopsis of major events in Marti's life before his first visit to Key West and an analysis of the social needs of the Cuban emigre community in Key West at that time. The bulk of the study concentrates on the period of three years when Marti made several historic visits to Key West and is based upon in-depth examination of the voluminous correspondence between Marti and dozens of Key West residents in all social categories as well as Marti's own newspaper Patria, which provided another avenue of communication with the emigre community. Analyzing these sources in light of specific events and challenges in Marti's short career as a leader, Ronning shows how Marti used the island of Key West and its emigre community as a psychic focus for the liberation of Cuba itself. The final chapter offers a synthesis of Marti's various techniques, skills, and qualities as well as Key West's response to his efforts.

The essays in this collection reflect two of Martí’s key observations during his time in the United States: first, how did he, an exile living in New York, view and read his North American neighbors from a sociocultural, political and literary perspective? José Martí, además de ser uno de los fundadores del pensamiento latinoamericano, fue, con su poesía, iniciador del modernismo e inspirador de poetas como Rubén Darío o Juan Ramón Jiménez. Editamos, modernizamos y comentamos en este volumen sus obras poéticas más importantes y significativas. En primer lugar, Ismaelillo, libro publicado en 1882, dedicado a su hijo, destaca porque en él confluyen las más variadas expresiones y escuelas literarias. Con estos versos, el autor abre la era modernista y se acerca a la poesía tradicional y a la del Siglo de Oro español. En segundo lugar, Versos Libres, que, aunque fueron escritos entre 1878 y 1882, no se publicaron hasta después de la muerte del poeta. Con estos «endecasílabos hirsutos» y dolorosos, Martí inicia la modernidad en el mundo hispánico e inaugura la poesía contemporánea de ciudad, que tendrá su continuación en Lorca, Vallejo o Neruda. Por último, Versos Sencillos, publicados cuatro años antes de su muerte, en 1891, suponen la culminación del proceso literario de Martí, evolución que partió del romanticismo, se desarrolló con las primeras creaciones modernistas y ya, al final de la vida, se decantó hacia las formas sencillas y populares. Mercedes Serna Arnaiz es profesora de literatura hispanoamericana en la Universidad de Barcelona, donde se doctoró con una tesis sobre José Martí y el modernismo y en donde imparte cursos de grado y de posgrado. Entre sus estudios más destacados se encuentran la edición filológica de los Comentarios reales, del Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (2000) y las antologías críticas Crónicas de Indias (2000), Poesía colonial hispanoamericana (siglos XVI y XVII), (2004) y La conquista del Nuevo Mundo. Textos y documentos de la aventura americana (2013). Es autora de un libro de ensayos titulado Modernismo y vanguardia: de Herrera y Reissig a Nicanor Parra, publicado en la colección Amaru, de Lima, en 2002. En 2008 publicó, con Bernat Castany, la Antología crítica de poesía modernista hispanoamericana, en Alianza Editorial, y, con Vicente Cervera, la edición y estudio en Cátedra de Cuentos fríos.
