Este libro reúne un conjunto de artículos que indagan sobre el ensayo de los escritores de ficción en América Latina, de 1970 a la actualidad. El tema delimita una cuestión específica: pensar sobre la instancia discursiva en que el escritor se despoja de las mediaciones de la ficción –el narrador, el personaje– y asume una enunciación subjetiva ligada al nombre propio y en consonancia con una experiencia íntima. Por cierto, retornar al ensayo en los días de hoy en que la literatura se ofrece como espacio de exploración de las más variadas formas del registro autobiográfico, al punto de invalidar la distinción entre lo vivido y lo imaginado, no significa restituir un debate sobre las especificidades de los géneros literarios; especificidades que, sabemos, la literatura, en su linaje moderno, se empeña en disolver. Al contrario, supone volver a una forma de escritura que, desde sus orígenes, hizo de la libertad su principio constitutivo, aproximando la palabra literaria a la experiencia del sujeto en un movimiento de identificación con la vida. Autores como Osman Lins, Luis Gusmán, Diamela Eltit, Héctor Libertella, Juan Villoro, Jorge Volpi y Sergio Chejfec, sus singulares modos de visitar el ensayo, inducen en este libro a la reflexión acerca de escrituras que desestabilizan los límites de las formas discursivas, configuran tradiciones literarias alternativas a los paradigmas canónicos y cuestionan nociones emblemáticas de la literatura latinoamericana.
