El viejo normalismo “fundacional” consideraba que la más legítima tarea que tenían que realizar los docentes de escuelas normales era la de “enseñar a enseñar”, es decir, lo que se sigue denominando “formar docentes”. Como si el aspirante a docente fuera una masa amorfa que estuviera esperando con total disposición a que le dieran la forma correcta. En esta perspectiva no hay nada que estudiar, pues todo es responsabilidad del “formador”, sin embargo, en este libro se ve que esto no es así, ni conceptual, ni prácticamente. El docente de normales actual es aquél que percibe la necesidad de investigar su práctica y la de los demás, de analizar su formación y la de los “otros” que le dan identidad a su labor; se percata de que es necesario profundizar en sus construcciones teóricas, pues han sido insuficientes, de que es necesario abonar desde la filosofía, la sociología, la política y demás ciencias de lo humano para elaborar análisis más complejos de los procesos formativos. Los autores de este libro son de esta nueva generación de docentes que sienten la necesidad de investigar lo que está pasando en las normales, dejando de lado la idea fundacional que se convierte en un verdadero obstáculo epistemológico.
