This title was first published in 2000: The papers presented in this volume are based on the discussions of a workshop which asked: how can ethnic and political cooperation be accomplished in ethnically and politically heterogeneous countries after the collapse of the communist regimes which left a void for nationalist and even chauvinist movements? How do people narrate events in their life story and in the history of their family or families when making a self-presentation? How are narratives and experiences in the present related to experiences and narratives in the past? This book answers these questions with a theoretical and empirical study of the interconnections between remembering, experiencing, and presenting what was experienced, at different points of the life course and of the associated collective histories. It also discusses rules for conducting interviews that support processes of remembering, and for carrying out an analysis that does justice to this dialectic. Entscheidungsträger halten an einem Projekt fest und investieren weiterhin Ressourcen, obwohl die Erfolgsaussichten immer geringer werden und das Projekt bei objektiver Betrachtung abgebrochen werden müsste. Als Erklärungen für diese eskalierende Bindung an einen erfolglosen Handlungsstrang werden die Selbstrechtfertigungs-Theorie und die Theorie der kognitiven Dissonanz angesehen. Bei der Erforschung des Phänomens der Eskalation von Commitment wurde in den letzten Jahren verstärkt der Einfluss von Entscheidungen auf die menschliche Informationsverarbeitung untersucht. Welche Informationen bezüglich ihrer Entscheidung erinnern Individuen ? Möglicherweise gibt es Unterschiede in der Menge und der Art der erinnerten Informationen zwischen eskalierenden und nicht eskalierenden Personen. Welche Determinanten beeinflussen die Erinnerungsleistung in Entscheidungsprozessen? Durch die Klärung dieser Fragen erhofft man sich ein besseres Verständnis von Eskalationseffekten und neue Ansätze für Deeskalationsstrategien. Bisherige Studien haben gezeigt, dass ein starker Zusammenhang zwischen Eskalation und Verantwortung besteht. Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit bildet deshalb die Frage nach dem Zusammenhang zwischen Verantwortung und Erinnerung im Rahmen von Entscheidungsprozessen. Nach Tetlock und Lerner (1999) ist Verantwortung als implizite oder explizite Erwartung, sich für eigene Meinungen, Gefühle oder Handlungen rechtfertigen zu müssen, zu verstehen. Venture capital plays an important role in the entrepreneurial process of providing financing and management support to young, rapidly growing companies. While venture capital investment success stories such as those of Microsoft, Apple and Google are well known, such "home runs" are rather rare. Many investments provide little or no return so that accurately evaluating the prospects of portfolio companies and terminating further engagement in unsuccessful ventures in time is key to the overall portfolio performance of venture capital firms. When venture capitalists act rationally it should be expected that investment terminations are neither systematically premature nor systematically delayed. However, recent studies have discovered a systematic tendency toward delayed project terminations of unsuccessful investments that cannot be reconciled with a model of rational decision making. The present study examines such delayed project terminations in the venture capital industry and investigates whether escalation of commitment may provide an appropriate perspective on the phenomenon and contribute to its explanation. The study develops a comprehensive theoretical framework that synthesizes and integrates several economically irrational drivers of project escalation. A large scale survey among European venture capitalists provides the basis for the empirical analysis of the hypothesized relationships. The analysis yields valuable new insights into the interaction of different escalation drivers, which are much more intertwined than previously supposed by the literature, and permits to suggest effective escalation countermeasures for practice. The considerations and findings of the study are generalizable beyond the venture capital context to a wide variety of settings in which organizations routinely make sequential investment decisions.
