Aspects Of Robertson Davies Novels written by Victor J. Lams and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Literary Criticism categories.

Completing the survey begun in Lams' Cornish Trilogy volume, Aspects of Robertson Davies' Novels discusses the Salterton and Deptford trilogies along with Davies' last two novels, Murther & Walking Spirits and The Cunning Man. The apprentice effort Tempest-Tost and the journeyman's success Leaven of Malice were followed by Davies' first genuinely fine novel, A Mixture of Frailties, the story of a talented Salterton girl who becomes a world-famous soprano. The Deptford trilogy is discussed in terms of Northrop Frye's «confession» form as it appears in Fifth Business, and in variations of that form in The Manticore and World of Wonders. Although Davies' Jungian enthusiasms produced certain flaws to which readers have objected, Murther & Walking Spirits is by no means a failure; it is best understood as an implicit spiritual history of Canada which is adumbrated in the generational experience of a single Canadian family. The Cunning Man concludes Davies' career with a narrative as rewardingly complex as any of the Cornish trilogy novels.

The Lost Garden is at once achingly beautiful and utterly compelling, exploring the destructive nature of secrets and the redemption that can come with accepting the past. The face Esme Waters presents to the world is not the face she sees in the mirror. Even her three daughters, Lily, Rose and Jasmine, don't know the truth behind her careful smile. But a chance Parisian meeting with a fascinating psychiatrist opens the first crack in Esme's mind, and suddenly the past is pursuing her. And once again she is running just as she always runs from lovers, friends, and the truth of what she lost in Dublin more than twenty years ago. While her children are rebelling against the rules, falling in love, and learning about loyalty, Esme discovers that sometimes the walls you build for protection need to come tumbling down . . . This volume serves to illustrate the promising insights to be gained when cross-fertilizing Cognitive Linguistics and contact linguistics, which each hold crucial ingredients to an encompassing study of contact-induced variation and change. Combining the study of the individual mind with the study of shared context, bridging research on experience and perspective with research on variation and change, and tackling the methodological complexities that this empirical approach to mental categorization entails, help us determine how the meaningful units that make up language are categorized and structured in the bi- and multilingual mind and, by extension, in any human mind. Together, the ten papers in this volume reveal the complexities of the interaction between usage, meaning and mind in contact-induced variation and change, which we hope will inspire future research exploring the possibilities of the cross-fertilization we have labeled Cognitive Contact Linguistics.
