This book examines Clement of Alexandria’s interdisciplinary approach to nature contemplation—which he terms “physiology” and “physics”—showing its internal consistency even in the absence of a clear methodological outline. It reconstructs Clement’s method of nature contemplation, which, while discernible throughout his writings, does not feature as such in one place. Yet it exists within the second stage of the broader threefold roadmap of spiritual advancement, which progresses from ethics to physics to divine vision (“epoptics”). Specifically, Clement’s physics itself has three steps: analysis, interpretation, and the spiritual vision of the world. To advance through the three stages of physics, one must acquire virtue, contemplative skills, and sound information regarding the nature of things. But only transformed people, whom Clement calls “holy gnostics,” saintly sages, have access to the final stage, “gnostic physiology.” This third step amounts to an insightful—“noetic”—perception of nature irreducible to either keen observation or the information gathered and processed by way of analysis and interpretation. This book presents Clement’s method against the backdrop of ancient disciplines of nature contemplation—and as paving the way for contemporary science-engaged theology. The volume is suitable for postgraduate students and scholars of the history of science and religion, religious studies, early Christian and late antique studies, and patristic studies, particularly those working on Clement of Alexandria.

In The Moral Psychology of Clement of Alexandria, Kathleen Gibbons proposes a new approach to Clement’s moral philosophy and explores how his construction of Christianity’s relationship with Jewishness informed, and was informed by, his philosophical project. As one of the earliest Christian philosophers, Clement’s work has alternatively been treated as important for understanding the history of relations between Christianity and Judaism and between Christianity and pagan philosophy. This study argues that an adequate examination of his significance for the one requires an adequate examination of his significance for the other. While the ancient claim that the writings of Moses were read by the philosophical schools was found in Jewish, Christian, and pagan authors, Gibbons demonstrates that Clement’s use of this claim shapes not only his justification of his authorial project, but also his philosophical argumentation. In explaining what he took to be the cosmological, metaphysical, and ethical implications of the doctrine that the supreme God is a lawgiver, Clement provided the theoretical justifications for his views on a range of issues that included martyrdom, sexual asceticism, the status of the law of Moses, and the relationship between divine providence and human autonomy. By contextualizing Clement’s discussions of volition against wider Greco-Roman debates about self-determination, it becomes possible to reinterpret the invocation of “free will” in early Christian heresiological discourse as part of a larger dispute about what human autonomy requires.

International scholarly consensus holds that despite his obvious Platonic affinities, Clement of Alexandria (ca. 150–215 CE) rejected the doctrine of reincarnation. This study finds that this consensus does not do justice to what Clement actually writes. In his most explicit statement, Clement singles out reincarnation as the example he wants to give of the finest doctrines of the best philosophers. Though most of Clement’s other writing is more subtle than that, endorsement is still the most plausible explanation of what he says. The tenet – clearly esoteric for Clement – is in harmony with his anthropology, ethics, and his synergistic soteriology that includes the crucial role of Jesus.
