From the creator of Sherlock Holmes, and one of the most famous writers of all time, -Sir Arthur Conan Doyle-, come the following nine books in which he reveals a very important part of his persona: his spiritualistic and esoteric side. Spirits, ghosts, apparitions, mediums... This prolific writer was also a huge believer in the supernatural, a member and honorary president of the Society for Psychical Research in England, and an avid writer on these subjects. Although some of his writings and believes were later on debunked or subject to ridicule, his prose, and the fact that he was convinced of everything he wrote, made him a major force in the field of Spiritism at the beginning of the 20th century. The books on this series are: THE NEW REVELATION THE VITAL MESSAGE THE COMING OF THE FAIRIES (very controversial and based on photographies that later on were proven to be a hoax). THE SPIRITUALIST'S READER (a beautiful manifesto) THE HISTORY OF SPIRITUALISM (VOL.1 & 2). A great academic work by Doyle PHENEAS SPEAKS THE HOUDINI ENIGMA (Houdini tried to convince Doyle that his act was an illusion. Doyle died maintaining Houdini had supernatural powers). Magic, Simon During suggests, has helped shape modern culture. Devoted to this deceptively simple proposition, During's superlative work, written over the course of a decade, gets at the aesthetic questions at the very heart of the study of culture. How can the most ordinary arts--and by "magic," During means not the supernatural, but the special effects and conjurings of magic shows--affect people? Modern Enchantments takes us deeply into the history and workings of modern secular magic, from the legerdemain of Isaac Fawkes in 1720, to the return of real magic in nineteenth-century spiritualism, to the role of magic in the emergence of the cinema. Through the course of this history, During shows how magic performances have drawn together heterogeneous audiences, contributed to the molding of cultural hierarchies, and extended cultural technologies and media at key moments, sometimes introducing spectators into rationality and helping to disseminate skepticism and publicize scientific innovation. In a more revealing argument still, Modern Enchantments shows that magic entertainments have increased the sway of fictions in our culture and helped define modern society's image of itself.

We all have an inheritance to leave...only some leave more than what is required. There is no greater gift of inheritance than the gift of words; whether written or spoken, they remain someone’s memory, and our legacy, forever. I do not ascribe to chance or happenstance. This novel was written over twenty years ago. I was working with my father-in-law to get it published before he passed from this life. Our plans and efforts, however, did not come to be; he passed away May 28, 2015. My daddy became sick the following year, putting this novel on hold. When my daddy passed away, I was left to care for my mother until I had to find an assisted-living facility to give her the care that she needed, and I could no longer personally provide. Which leads us to the setting of this novel, taking place in the early 1990s and having reference to stories as far back as the 1920s. I never thought that at the age of fifty-three, I would be able to recall a simpler time in my life that wasn’t so long ago. In the early 1990s, we had not yet experienced the technology boom that forever changed communication and the way we live. In this novel, you will find no cell phones, no texting, no phone cameras, no social media, no key fobs, and no computerized medical notes. What you will find, however, is the simple beauty of the personal relationships of the residents and staff of an assisted-living facility. While the storyline of this novel is poignantly beautiful, there is a much deeper understanding to be gained. We would all do well if we could learn to listen honestly and become slower to speak. May we be provoked to desire to check ourselves, humble ourselves, and take it upon ourselves to ascertain the exact meaning of our vocabulary. My prayer is that we may be encouraged by the intention and desire of the author in the sharing of this novel, The Voice of the Sphinx—the inheritance of my father-in-law, John J. Klingerman, MD—to his dear children, John, Kelly, Mark, and Chris.

They Marched Into Sunlight written by David Maraniss and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-10-14 with History categories.

David Maraniss tells the epic story of Vietnam and the sixties through the events of a few gripping, passionate days of war and peace in October 1967. With meticulous and captivating detail, They Marched Into Sunlight brings that catastrophic time back to life while examining questions about the meaning of dissent and the official manipulation of truth—issues that are as relevant today as they were decades ago. In a seamless narrative, Maraniss weaves together the stories of three very different worlds: the death and heroism of soldiers in Vietnam, the anger and anxiety of antiwar students back home, and the confusion and obfuscating behavior of officials in Washington. To understand what happens to the people in these interconnected stories is to understand America's anguish. Based on thousands of primary documents and 180 on-the-record interviews, the book describes the battles that evoked cultural and political conflicts that still reverberate.
