Volume Two of this bilingual series PRE-ROMAN SPAIN (LA ESPAÑA PRERROMANA) briefly covers the history of the Iberian Peninsula beginning with Atapuerca near Burgos, where the remains of perhaps the oldest man in Europa have been unearthed to the Roman invasion of Spain in 218 B.C. Teachers and students will enjoy reading about the ancient dolmens built by the Celts in the beautiful green mountains of Galicia. Farther to the east the Iberians arrived from Africa giving their name to the peninsula. The Phoenicians sailed from the eastern Mediterranean to trade with the mysterious people of Tarshish. There they founded the settlement of Gadir (modern Cádiz) about 1100 B.C. now considered to be the oldest city in Europe. The Greeks later established the trading center of Marseilles (France) and came down the coast to found the settlement of Ampurias on the northeast coast of modern Spain. Soon thereafter, the Carthaginians founded Cartago Nova (Cartagena). The Romans, ever trying to expand their influence in the western Mediterranean, saw the Carthaginians as a threat. This conflict resulted in the Punic Wars. Hannibal, the famous Carthaginian general, left Cartago Nova with his large army and formidable elephants to traverse all of Spain and France. After crossing the Alps, he attacked the Romans from the north. However, after many victories, Hannibal was finally defeated, thus leaving the door open for the Roman invasion of Spain in 218 B.C. This eBook is complete with questions to help (bilingual) students seeking to improve their language skills in either English or Spanish or both while, at the same time, learning about Pre-Roman history. Check Volume 3 of this series for the history of Roman Spain. This book is the second in a series of bilingual guides (English & Spanish) for teachers and students -- each featuring an important topic in the field of history, literature or art of Spain and Latin America. Beginning students in either language can learn about their culture in their native language and advanced students can concentrate on the new language they want to learn. Why not learn a language and, at the same time, learn about its great culture by studying history, literature and art? These guides will be especially helpful for bilingual students who will learn to appreciate their history and background in either or both languages. Questions are included and can be used as notes to compose short presentations to promote connected speech rather than one or two word answers.

El léxico-gramática del español provides an alternative approach to the study of advanced Spanish grammar. Drawing on L1 and L2 Spanish language corpora and linguistic research to describe key lexico-grammatical characteristics of the Spanish language, this book gives students insight into real, variable, and contextualized usage of Spanish. Each chapter includes guided exercises so that students can conduct their own searches of the corpus and draw evidence-based conclusions on how particular grammar structures are used by Spanish speakers at varying levels of proficiency. This is an ideal resource for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students of Spanish language and linguistics.

Ranging from cuneiform to shorthand, from archaic Greek to modern Chinese, from Old Persian to modern Cherokee, this is the only available work in English to cover all of the world's writing systems from ancient times to the present. Describing scores of scripts in use now or in the past around the world, this unusually comprehensive reference offers a detailed exploration of the history and typology of writing systems. More than eighty articles by scholars from over a dozen countries explain and document how a vast array of writing systems work--how alphabets, ideograms, pictographs, and hieroglyphics convey meaning in graphic form. The work is organized in thirteen parts, each dealing with a particular group of writing systems defined historically, geographically, or conceptually. Arranged according to the chronological development of writing systems and their historical relationships within geographical areas, the scripts are divided into the following sections: the ancient Near East, East Asia, Europe, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Additional parts address the ongoing process of decipherment of ancient writing systems; the adaptation of traditional scripts to new languages; new scripts invented in modern times; and graphic symbols for numerical, music, and movement notation. Each part begins with an introductory article providing the social and cultural context in which the group of writing systems was developed. Articles on individual scripts detail the historical origin of the writing system, its structure (with tables showing the forms of the written symbols), and its relationship to the phonology of the corresponding spoken language. Each writing system is illustrated by a passage of text, and accompanied by a romanized version, a phonetic transcription, and a modern English translation. A bibliography suggesting further reading concludes each entry. Matched by no other work in English, The World's Writing Systems is the only comprehensive resource covering every major writing system. Unparalleled in its scope and unique in its coverage of the way scripts relate to the languages they represent, this is a resource that anyone with an interest in language will want to own, and one that should be a part of every library's reference collection.
