Les processus liés à la phase actuelle de la mondialisation ont pour écho des repositionnements identitaires à toutes les échelles. Comment se traduisent-ils dans l'espace ? Comment est utilisé l'espace pour renforcer et justifier les appartenances identitaires ou au contraire les atténuer ? Autant de questions auxquelles cet ouvrage apporte des éléments de réponse à travers la comparaison de deux grands pays " du Sud " : l'Inde et l'Afrique du Sud. Outre les divisions sociales " habituelles ", qui vont peut-être en s'accentuant, ces deux pays sont marqués par l'héritage de structures fondamentalement inégalitaires : celle des " races " imposée aux temps de l'apartheid en Afrique du Sud, et celle des castes propre à l'hindouisme en Inde où il faut ajouter une segmentation en termes de communautés religieuses. Par-delà des différences fondamentales, voilà qui forme pour le meilleur des " nations arc-en-ciel ", pour reprendre l'expression de Desmond Tutu ; et pour le pire des identités parfois conflictuelles, projetées sur des espaces qui en retour représentent souvent des éléments fondamentaux de ces identités - des " territoires ". Cet ouvrage est l'aboutissement d'un programme de recherche lancé par le laboratoire Géotropiques (Université de Paris X-Nanterre) et l'Institut français d'Afrique du Sud (Johannesburg). Il a regroupé des chercheurs sud-africains, indiens et français, géographes, sociologues, historiens, démographes, anthropologues et politologues. Après une première partie consacrée à des perspectives théoriques sur le comparatisme, les seconde et troisième parties du livre abordent les identités et les territoires à vaste échelle. Enfin l'inscription des identités dans l'espace est vue plus spécifiquement à l'échelle urbaine dans la quatrième partie consacrée aux territoires citadins.

The European Physical Society Conference “Notions of Physics in Natural Philosophy” was held in 23-25 September 2007 in Athens. It was organized by the Program of History and Philosophy of Science of the Institute for Neohellenic Research / National Hellenic Research Foundation and the Laboratory of Science Education, Epistemology and Educational Technology of the University of Athens. The Conference was supported by the History of Physics Committee of the European Physical Society and the History of Physics Group of Institute of Physics (England). The latter was represented by Mr. Malcolm Cooper, editor of the Newsletter of the Group who kindly gave as a brief description of the activities of the Group. The main themes of the Conference were: The emergence of notions of physics in ancient philosophy The concept of physical laws in Philosophy of Nature during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance The mathematization of Natural Philosophy and the emergence of classical sciences. We hope that the present volume of the Proceedings will be a useful tool for those interested on the subject.

Le présent ouvrage est le résultat d’une recherche conjointe entre les Universités de Bologne, Rennes et Bruxelles sur le thème de la dimension extérieure de l’espace de liberté, de sécurité et de justice de l’Union européenne (ELSJ). Which public and whose space? The understanding of public space as an arena where individuals can claim full use and access hides a reality of constant negotiation, conflict and surveillance. This collection uses case studies concerning the management, use, and transgression of public space to invite reflection on the way in which everyday social interaction is framed and shaped by the physical environment and vice versa. International experts from fields including geography, criminology, sociology and urban studies come together to debate the concepts of order and conflict in public space. This book is divided into two parts: spaces of control, and spaces of transgression. Section I focuses on formal and informal surveillance and the politics of control, using case studies to compare strategies in spaces including Olympic cities, luxury skyscrapers, residential neighbourhoods and shopping malls. Section II focuses on transgressive or deviant behaviour in public spaces, with case studies examining behaviour in nightlife districts, governance of homelessness, boy-racer culture and abortion protests.
