En ce début de XXIe siècle, les risques occupent une place prépondérante dans l'actualité de la planète et structurent une nouvelle demande sociale à laquelle la recherche doit apporter des réponses. Au gré des événements qui affectent les rapports entre milieux et sociétés ou les dynamiques internes à ces dernières, de nouveaux risques émergent et les méthodes d'analyse se renouvellent ou se recomposent. Pour le géographe, la notion de risque conduit à une nouvelle manière de voir le monde. Jusqu'au milieu des années quatre-vingt-dix, la géographie tropicale a principalement traité du risque à l'échelle locale, et sous l'angle du risque naturel, souvent réduit à un aléa, dont il s'agissait avant tout de décrire les modalités de fonctionnement. Aujourd'hui, le champ spatial et thématique de l'analyse s'est considérablement élargi et enrichi. A l'emboîtement des échelles - du local au global - répond la grande diversité des problématiques d'étude concernées par le risque et une réflexion épistémologique sur les notions d'aléa, de vulnérabilité et d'enjeux, consubstancielles de la notion de risque. Les Xe journées de Géographie Tropicale qui se sont tenues à Orléans en septembre 2003 attestent de cette évolution et constituent une étape importante dans l'émergence du risque comme thème majeur de la géographie tropicale. Le présent ouvrage reprend 35 des 49 communications et conférences qui y ont été présentées. Il se structure en cinq chapitres respectivement consacrés aux risques naturels ; à la santé publique et aux risques sanitaire ; à la structuration des territoires sous contrainte des risques ; au rapport entre mondialisation et risque territorial ; à la gestion des risques. Le point de vue et les pratiques des communautés locales sont confrontés aux outils et méthodes de la géographie moderne que sont la télédétection et les systèmes d'information géographique.

Our societies have become very crisis-prone. This book explores crises and the methods of anticipation, management and reconstruction, and considers a risk-crisis-territorial development continuum. The aim is to better understand a widely used concept and clarify the methods of action in the field of crisis management.
