Ecuador reconfiguró radicalmente su espacio nacional durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX. De un país básicamente rural, escasamente poblado y mayoritariamente serrano, se convirtió en otro urbano costeño y quintuplicó su número de habitantes. Se urbanizó velozmente y depredó buena parte de sus ecosistemas originarios durante de los ciclos cacaotero, bananero y petrolero. Este trabajo explica las grandes transformaciones espaciales a la luz de los distintos modos de desarrollo que se instituyeron entre 1948 y 2006. Las preguntas centrales son: ¿cómo los diversos modos de desarrollo han incidido, determinado e influenciado en la configuración del espacio nacional? ¿cómo se relaciona el proceso de acumulación y las formas espaciales? y ¿cuál ha sido el rol del Estado en los diversos momentos? El argumento central es que cada uno de esos modos de desarrollo produjo una particular configuración del espacio. Los modos de desarrollo, y particularmente las formas que adopta el régimen de acumulación produjeron una espacialidad específica a través de un conjunto de estrategias y mecanismos espaciales en los que el Estado ha jugado un rol protagónico.

Este ensayo intenta aproximarse desde distintas perspectivas a la globalización. Consta de una discusión teórica inicial y continúa con tres partes que pueden leer se de manera independiente y que giran en torno a la literatura, la política y el cine. En el primer capítulo se discuten sobre posibles conceptos de lo que sería una civilización o una cultura, y cómo podríamos entender la globalización como una civilización o cultura, o como la cultura de Occidente en su última fase de expansión. En un segundo momento reflexiona sobre el lugar que ocupan las obras de César Aira y Guido Tamayo en la cultura global. La tesis de la tercera parte es que Hugo Chávez llevó a la práctica las teorías de Slavov Žižek. En la parte final se interroga por la relación que establecen las películas de Luis Estrada con un inminente cambio de sistema-mundo. Al encarar la globalización económica, política y cultural, estos films se afirman allí donde el Estado desaparece y la globalización sólo tiene un carácter destructivo.

In The Nature of Space, pioneering Afro-Brazilian geographer Milton Santos attends to globalization writ large and how local and global orders intersect in the construction of space. Santos offers a theory of human space based on relationships between time and ontology. He argues that when geographers consider the inseparability of time and space, they can then transcend fragmented realities and partial truths without trying to theorize their way around them. In advancing his vision of a geography of action and liberation, Santos begins by turning to the roots of modern geography and its colonial legacies. Bernhard Varenius’ books influenced the history of science in such a way that Isaac Newton, Alexander von Humboldt and Tsar Peter the Great all referred to him. Varenius wrote the first comprehensive description of Japan (Descriptio regni Japoniae, 1649) from a European perspective, exclusively based on a diversity of sources. But the impact of his Geographia generalis (1650) explains his ranking among the founding fathers of geography as a science. He called ‘general’ geography a branch of (applied) mathematics which does not deal with regional specifics.
