Faced with a depleted planet and a series of connected crises, socially minded agents and entities within the world of culture and the arts are reacting from within. With insights from sociology, economics, and cultural management and policy, this book aims to chronicle the journey of SMart – a cultural and artistic social enterprise now present in eight European countries – in order to illustrate such organisation’s efforts to achieve its potential for social innovation and transformation. Tackling the endemic precariousness and intermittency of work through innovative arrangements for cultural workers and artists has been central to these efforts. In many cases, however, this activism not only had a direct impact at the level of individual and collective labour, but also has transformed the ways culture is ‘governed’. Readers of this book will better understand the connection between social innovation and culture and the arts; gain awareness of the trends and transformations within the field of culture and cultural work and their connection with institutional arrangements; and critically engage with the processes, challenges and benefits of scaling up and diffusing social innovation. El estudio de la vivienda y de su contenido incorpora un amplio abanico de posibilidades de conocer multitud de aspectos sobre lo que representaba el espacio doméstico para los hombres y mujeres del pasado. La casa ha sido y es una gran conquista de la humanidad, como fundamento material de la familia, pilar del orden social, realidad moral y política, unidad organizativa y, en la época medieval, célula fiscal y demográfica. Además, en ella convergen numerosas actividades, desde la reproducción del agregado doméstico a la transmisión de conocimientos y sentimientos; la socialización de la familia o la producción de la empresa doméstica. Pero, además, la casa no puede percibirse como algo aislado, sino que se debe tener también en cuenta su contenido material, todo el universo de enseres, de muebles, vajillas, ropas, etc., que forman parte de eso que llamamos la “cultura material” de un período histórico. Y tampoco debemos olvidar que, en las sociedades complejas, una vivienda es también un bien inmueble, un objeto económico en sí misma, que puede ser comprado, vendido, donado, dado en herencia, dividido, ampliado o hipotecado. Este carácter poliédrico de la vivienda en la Europa medieval es tratado aquí por investigadores de diferentes disciplinas, desde historiadores a arqueólogos, historiadores del arte o arquitectos que, en dieciocho trabajos diferentes, proyectan sus miradas convergentes sobre los hogares de la Europa medieval.

This book contributes to the understanding of the transformative power of incorporating translanguaging, the dynamic language practices of bi/multilingual communities, in the schooling of US Latinx children and youth. It showcases instructional spaces in US education where Latinx children’s and youths’ translanguaging is at the center of their teaching and learning. By centering racialized Latinx bilingual students, including their knowledge systems and cultural and linguistic practices, it transforms the monolingual-white supremacy ideology of many educational spaces. In so doing, racialized bilingual Latinx subjectivities are potentially transformed, as students learn to understand processes of colonization and domination that have robbed them of opportunities to use their entire semiotic repertoire in learning. The book makes a strong theoretical contribution to the field, putting decolonial, post-structuralist understandings of language and bilingualism alongside critical race theory and critical pedagogy.

Los servicios ferroviarios urbanos de alto rendimiento, cuando se abordan cuidadosamente en el contexto de un proyecto de desarrollo, pueden ayudar a mejorar la calidad de vida de los ciudadanos brindándoles acceso a oportunidades laborales y servicios esenciales, tanto del entorno urbano inmediato como de comunidades vecinas. Este manual sintetiza y difunde conocimientos sobre planificación, implementación y operación de los proyectos ferroviarios urbanos para: i) destacar la necesidad de realizar estudios tempranos y planificar los proyectos, ii) contribuir a que los proyectos sean más sostenibles (desde el punto de vista económico, social y ambiental); iii) mejorar los beneficios socioeconómicos de los usuarios y el acceso de estos a distintas oportunidades; iv) maximizar el valor de la participación privada, cuando corresponda, y v) fortalecer la capacidad de las instituciones encargadas de la gestión e implementación de los proyectos. Se ofrece experiencia para lidiar con los desafíos técnicos, institucionales y financieros a los que se enfrentan los tomadores de decisiones de proyectos ferroviarios urbanos. Se reúnen los conocimientos especializados del personal del Banco Mundial y el aporte de numerosos especialistas para sintetizar buenas prácticas y recomendaciones basadas en experiencia global que no responden a intereses comerciales, financieros ni políticos, entre otros. El material presentado tiene como objetivo servir de guía imparcial para maximizar el impacto y afrontar los desafíos que conllevan los sistemas ferroviarios urbanos en las ciudades de países desarrollados y en desarrollo.
