This is the first complete monograph on the life and work of one of Italy`s most important contemporary artists and critics, Franco Vaccari. Exhibitions in real time covers his artistic production, from photography to video to his critical writing and is accompanied by a text written by a series of leading curators and critics. The book, which has been published to accompany a major exhibition at Spazio Oberdan in Milan, documents Vaccari's artistic evolution, from his beginning as a visual poet to the conceptual path undertaken since the late '60s and realised in a series of experimentations based on the use of different media, photography and video. Working in 1970s Italy, a group of artists—namely Ugo La Pietra, Maurizio Nannucci, Francesco Somaini, Mauro Staccioli, Franco Summa, and Franco Vaccari—sought new spaces to create and exhibit art. Looking beyond the gallery, they generated sculptural, conceptual, and participatory interventions, called Arte Ambientale (Environmental Art), situated in the city streets. Their experiments emerged at a time of cultural crisis, when fierce domestic terrorism aggravated an already fragile political situation. To confront the malaise, these artists embraced a position of artistic autonomy and social critique, democratically connecting the city's inhabitants through direct art practices.

Parlare di fotografia oggi è un po’ come parlare del tempo, argomento logoro per uso e manipolazioni ermeneutiche. Non era così quando nel 1978 Piergiorgio Firinu pubblicò “La gabbia sui Pirenei”. Erano anni in cui la fotografia iniziava a occupare uno spazio nel mondo dell’arte. Il sottotitolo del libro era “Teoria sull'uso dell’immagine fotografica”. La prima edizione del libro è del 1978. Ferveva il dibattito sul libro di McLuhan pubblicato in Italia nel 1967 da Garzanti “Gli strumenti del comunicare”. Gli artisti che hanno pubblicato immagini e testi sul libro di Firinu, sono i precursori di tendenze che sarebbero dilagante nel mondo dell’arte. Nel recensire “La Gabbia sui Pirenei”, sul Corriere della Sera, Giuseppe Turroni rilevò l’originalità dell’assunto. Lo stesso argomento era stato trattato dall'autore nei seminari con Beppe Risso all’Accademia Albertina di Torino, alla PepperdineUniversity di Malibu CA. (USA), nei vari dibattiti e seminari con Harold Rosemberg, Harry Lieberman, Harold Szeemann. La riedizione del libro offre un'occasione ai giovani per conoscere l’origine di fenomeni artistici che oggi sono storia.

Il numero 31 di “Fata Morgana” è dedicato a uno dei temi più discussi nell’attuale dibattito sulle immagini e il cinema, quello della Coscienza. Sempre più studiosi contemporanei utilizzano infatti il cinema come metafora privilegiata per spiegare il fenomeno della coscienza, e sempre più saperi, come le neuroscienze e il cognitivismo, la filosofia analitica e fenomenologica, trovano nel cinema un oggetto esemplare per mettere a fuoco i nodi più cruciali dell’attualità e del pensiero contemporaneo. Questo numero di “Fata Morgana” entra con forza in tale dibattito attraverso, per esempio, la conversazione d’apertura con uno dei maggiori studiosi a livello mondiale in questo campo, Antonio Damasio, che parla e analizza il «film-nel-cervello» e il rapporto tra immagine, emozione e mente.
