Segundo volume da reunião de poemas memorialísticos de Drummond, Boitempo II: Esquecer para lembrar retorna em novo projeto, com posfácio de Heloisa Murgel Starling. Em Boitempo II, Drummond se afasta da infância rural e ingressa em um mundo novo, o da tecnização forçada, onde só importa o que cada um produz ou comercializa: chapéu, gaiola, punhal, geleia, pão de queijo, caixão. O menino de Itabira, porém, nada fabrica: apenas assiste às fabricações. É desse ponto de vista, de observador desconfiado, que vemos o progresso enfim chegar ao Brasil do interior, impondo suas multas e restrições: é proibido galopar pelas ruas de pedra, estender roupa branca entre os túmulos do cemitério, rezar alto de madrugada. Mas, então, pergunta-se o futuro poeta: "Que fazer, para não morrer de paz?" Carlos é mandado à escola, deixa a casa paterna, aventura-se no trem de ferro, estuda latim e gramática, destaca-se nos panfletos estudantis, ganha o apelido de Anarquista. Os padres o expulsam do colégio, acusando-o de "insubordinação mental". Rejeitado, o adolescente perde a fé. Decide deixar de ser "santo" para tornar-se "barro e palavrão, / humana falha, signo terrestre". Cavalgando o tempo — "uma cadeira ao sol, e nada mais" —, o poeta cresce. De repente se vê moço e solto em Belo Horizonte. Bancado pela família, frequenta a vida literária, entre os modernistas do Café Estrela e da Livraria Alves. Forma-se em Farmácia, mas "apenas na moldura". Vadia, namora e dorme. Ouve o chamado da escrita e do serviço público, torna-se redator de jornal, escreve para o Partido Republicano Mineiro, mas algo o incomoda. É a "consciência suja", o remorso de ser um "inconvicto escriba oficial". Ele ainda cultiva em si o menino Carlos, o do segundo ginasial, que sonhava "emitir clarões / de astro-rei literário". Não demoraria a acontecer. Era só uma questão de tempo.
