Perché à 400 mètres au-dessus des gorges de l’Arc, le village d’Aussois marque peu ou prou l’entrée de la haute vallée de la Maurienne, massif alpin français largement ouvert sur l’Italie. Un peu à l’écart de la route du Mont-Cenis, Aussois est situé à près de 1 500 mètres d’altitude sur un petit plateau orienté au sud. Aussois et ses 4 194 hectares, sa montagne, ses vaches laitières, ses fromages ne sont ici qu’un prétexte à la recherche interdisciplinaire. Dans cet ouvrage unique, une équipe de chercheurs développe une épistémologie et les moyens de l’écologie territoriale, dans une démarche transposable a priori à toute étude empirique d’écologie territoriale. Environnement, histoire, réseaux, élevage, tourisme, capabilité, résilience, métabolisme, biogéochimie... tous les aspects et les concepts utiles sont mobilisés pour analyser le territoire. Les transformations socio-écologiques de la montagne sont ainsi retracées depuis la transition d’une économie presque autarcique à une économie de production de biens et services à destination du monde urbain. Ces transformations ont leur pendant social et culturel (une société d’échanges), mais aussi environnemental, avec une pression accrue sur les milieux. À l’heure où de grands discours sont prononcés ici ou là en France sur l’importance de l’économie circulaire et de la transition énergétique, cet ouvrage apporte un regard aussi objectif que possible sur les flux d’énergie et de matière. Il montre aussi combien une analyse territoriale, fine et interdisciplinaire, est indispensable à la réflexion sur les enjeux de soutenabilité planétaire.

In the same realm as social ecology, industrial ecology and the circular economy, a new interdisciplinary field is growing: territorial ecology. Based on the analysis of the metabolism of human societies at a local level, it helps us diagnose a socioecosystem. This diagnostic is not only based on what is circulating, but also on how it is organized and why. Who is at the origin of a flow? What are their motivations? Who has the power to make decisions about it? This methodology, taking into account both the material description of human societies and the analysis of decisionmaking processes, might also be relevant for territorial diagnostics. It leads us to a systemic view of the consequences of individual and collective actions on the sustainability of local socio ecosystems. Socio-ecological transition implies a substantial evolution of human societies. Innovation, be it technological, organizational or social, is intrinsically involved in this evolution. However, if transition calls for disruptive rather than incremental innovations, we must also assess these innovations with a systemic view of their consequences.

Face au dérèglement climatique, à la disparition massive de la biodiversité, à la pénurie d’un nombre croissant de ressources stratégiques, l’évolution de la société doit être pensée de façon systémique. C’est ce que propose l’écologie territoriale fondée sur l’analyse du métabolisme des sociétés humaines et de la mesure de la circulation des flux représentant la matérialité de ces sociétés. Écologie territoriale et transition socio-écologique présente cette approche interdisciplinaire fondée sur l’optimisation des flux (eau, énergie, déchets, etc.), tout en apportant des nouveautés méthodologiques. Il s’intéresse notamment aux questions fondamentales suivantes : qui est à l’origine de la circulation des flux ? Avec quelles motivations ? Qui dispose du pouvoir de décision de cette circulation ? This book makes the case for why we should care about islands and their sustainability. Islands are hotspots of biocultural diversity and home to 600 million people that depend on one-sixth of the earth’s total area, including the surrounding oceans, for their subsistence. Today, they are at the frontlines of climate change and face an existential crisis. Islands are, however, potential “hubs of innovation” that are uniquely positioned to be leaders in sustainability and climate action. This volume argues that a full-fledged program on “island industrial ecology” is urgently needed, with the aim of offering policy-relevant insights and strategies to sustain small islands in an era of global environmental change. The nine contributions in this volume cover a wide range of applications of socio-metabolic research, from flow accounts to stock analysis and their relationship to services in space and time. They offer insights into how reconfiguring patterns of resource use will allow island governments to build resilience and adapt to the challenges of climate change.

This Open Access book presents feedback from the ‘Territorial Agroecological Transition in Action’- TATA-BOX research project, which was devoted to these specific issues. The multidisciplinary and multi-organisation research team steered a four-year action-research process in two territories of France. It also presents: i) the key dimensions to be considered when dealing with agroecological transition: diversity of agriculture models, management of uncertainties, polycentric governance, autonomies, and role of actors’ networks; ii) an operational and original participatory process and associated boundary tools to support local stakeholders in shifting from a shared diagnosis to a shared action plan for transition, and in so doing developing mutual understanding and involvement; iii) an analysis of the main effects of the methodology on research organisation and on stakeholders’ development and application; iv) critical analysis and foresights on the main outcomes of TATA-BOX, provided by external researchers.

This comprehensive scientific work embraces, within the generic theme of "educations, territorialities and territories", the vast majority of different facets of the complex relationships between educations and territories that have developed over time.
